Thieves plunder crashed SUV of tires, wheels and battery - while its dying driver lay trapped underneath
A man who was crushed to death by his SUV after a fatal accident suffered the final indignity of being robbed as he lay trapped under the vehicle.
Police in New Mexico say 26-year-old Steven Roy Reese of Carlsbad was killed either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning when he apparently lost control of his 1996 Ford Explorer on a little-used dirt road.
However, when they got to the vehicle they discovered that somebody had stolen wheels, tires and the battery from the wrecked SUV as it lay on top of the victim.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports the medical investigator determined Reese had been dead for between eight and 12 hours before police found him.
Police Lt. Jennifer Moyers says removal of the items was both illegal and extremely insensitive. She says possible criminal charges include theft and failure to give notice of an accident.
Moyers added that if the thief attempts to sell the stolen items that would add an additional charge to the rap sheet.
Officers believe that Reese was driving on the remote dirt road next to an irrigation canal between Lea Street and Boyd Drive near Carlsbad when he lost control of the car.
Authorities believe the 26-year-old overcorrected his steering to try and regain control. This caused the 1996 Ford Explorer to flip twice and then land on top of him.
Then some time during the night Goodyear Wrangler tires, two Ford factory aluminum wheels and the battery were removed from his SUV.
Sick: Thieves stole the tires, wheels and battery from the man's 1996 Ford Explorer, similar to the one pictured here

As if they’re going to catch the thieves...
Plus, it was the EEEEEEEVIL SUV that killed the man, so the EEEEEEEEVIL SUV deserves to be punished (Leftist thought process)...
Obamaland
Societal rabies.
Good thing it didn’t have those Firestone Wilderness AT tires on it.....
Every day I look for something in the news that would indicate things are getting better.Today is not that day.
I had something very similar happen. Wrecked a Jeep in Fayetteville travelling from one swimmin’ hole to the next back in the 80’s. Pretty bad wreck. The folks who were following me, according to the lady who called 911, stole stuff that was scattered around afterwards while I was waiting for assistance. Nice people.
New Mexico. Much like Old Mexico.
That’s just so wrong on so many levels.
Well,at least you can say that you drove in Fayettenam and lived to tell......
“Just walk away...”
One of my kids best friends was killed in a car accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
He was missing for a month when his parents asked the police to check his cell phone records.
The phone was being used by someone else who had found the wreck and had stolen the phone. The police located the phone & the thief, After questioning the thief led the police to the wreck. The boy had been thrown out of the car and his body was nearby.
Lowlife scum are all over the place.
Why would anyone want ANYTHING off of a 1996 Explorer?
Trust me... I am in Hobbs on yet another "deployment". The Permian Basin is exactly like a Mad Max movie. Sitting at a stoplight back in October in Hobbs... my truck took a random bullet hit... on the doorpost... next to my head. Had I chose to stop 3 inches shorter at that light, I wouldn't be writing this.
Is he related to the Deming FFL Reeses, who have been perecuted to prison and poverty by the Obama-appointed anti-gun US Attorney?
I would be willing to bet, given the relative proximity of Carlsbad to the Mexican border, that those thieves were some of the folks who are waiting for amnesty.
It could certainly seem that way, but its more like a combination of the old style wild west and oil-field gusher towns of the mid-1900's. Hundreds of good paying jobs for those willing to work (and who can pass a drug test) but no housing to speak of; a hotel building boom, RV and camper spaces going for $500+ per month or more; and convenience stores loaded to the ceiling with cases of Bud Light every Friday.
But with it the crime and shootings.
A co-worker told me the cops were raiding the drug-house across the street from our office when he arrived for work (I came in before dawn to get ready for field work and all was quiet). Not the first time - a raid or cops are called to that location several times a year.
A couple of months ago a robbery suspect ran a stop sign in front of the building and hit another car. He was slightly injured but couldn't get away before the cops arrived to nab him.
And in other news from Carlsbad, a local jury awarded $58 million to the family of a driver who was killed when an oilfield truck turned in front of him. Driving into Hobbs from Carlsbad, you have a big lawyer billboard advertising big $$ awards to victims of oilfield accidents.
And finally, after years and years of propping up state coffers with oilfield royalties and tax money, the state is going to rebuild the pot-holed, narrow (no shoulders or pull-off opportunities), two-lane highway west of town traveled by many thousands of big rigs and oilfield workers each day. It would have been rebuilt sooner, I'm sure, but a half-billion dollars of state road funds went to build former Governor Richardson's Railroad from ABQ to trendy, gay, radical liberal Santa Fe in the last decade.
He has told me some similar stories that would curl my and your hair (if I had any).
It's Mad Max meets the Police State out there.
