Public support for gay marriage has hit a new high as Americans increasingly see homosexuality not as a choice but as a way some people are, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The poll shows that 58 percent of Americans now believe it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married; 36 percent say it should be illegal. Public attitudes toward gay marriage are a mirror image of what they were a decade ago: in 2003, 37 percent favored gay nuptials, and 55 percent opposed them.
The Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage next week, and nearly two-thirds of all Americans say the matter should be decided for all states on the basis of the U.S. Constitution, not with each state making its own laws.
Among young adults age 18 to 29, support for gay marriage is overwhelming, hitting a record high of 81 percent in the new poll. Support has also been increasing among older adults, but those aged 65 years old and up remain opposed, on balance: 44 percent say same-sex marriage should be legal; 50 percent say illegal.
A slim majority of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents under 50 years old now support gay marriage. Nearly seven in 10 of those aged 65 and up oppose it, although that is down from more than eight in 10 just four years ago.
There has been a related movement in public opinion about homosexuality. Fully 62 percent of Americans now say being gay is just the way some people are, not something people choose to be. About 20 years ago, fewer than half of the public said so.

Even if it isn’t a choice, that does not mean it is normal.
And after Obama nominates 2 or 3 more SCOTUS justices ala Kagan/Sotomayor, gay marriage, abortions on demand at any time including very late term, free contraceptives to all, free surgery for transgendering, amnesty to all illegals and more Billions in military aid to Muslim Brotherhood are all certain in our future.
Thanks a lot voters!
Polls don’t matter.
Check with God, His teachings and the Bible.
Government by polls and focus groups. Exactly what the founding fathers DIDN’T want.
The only thing that matters is if Roberts and Kennedy can be influenced by public opinion polls.
If either of them are, the ruling on Prop 8 will go against us.
Don’t matter what Roberts opines. The conservatives on SCOTUS are getting old, replacements by Obama are coming. 4 years is a long time.
Cf. Juvenal’s Satire II for complete up-to-date coverage of this situation from 2000 years ago. It’s uncanny.
“Such is the degradation to which we have come!”

... I guess that’s hate speech. I’ve been waiting for a purge of the Loeb Library.
“And after Obama nominates 2 or 3 more SCOTUS justices ala Kagan/Sotomayor...”
It looks like he doesn’t need to - he’s doing rather nicely as things are. He’s on schedule at “fundamentally transforming America”.
National health care - check
Gays in the military - check
Creative a culture of dependence - check
Gay marriage - pretty much there
Amnesty for illegals - around the corner
Gun control - making progress
Agenda 21 - going on all around us under the radar
Turning America into pro-muslim and anti-israel - work in progress
What have I left out?
It doesn’t matter anyway. The average American is far too selfish for real marriage. That is why divorces are escalating and many simply aren’t getting married to begin with.
The country is doomed. North Korea can go ahead and nuke us.
-> add another 10-12 million on food stamps
-> impose wind fall profits tax on oil companies
-> give that money to green energy companies such as Solyndra
-> disarm military another 30-40%
-> expand union government employees another 20-30%
-> Let crony capitalism make more profits and pay no taxes such as GE & his contributors from Wall Street Big Banks
-> Kill Keystone pipeline for good
-> prohibit oil drilling on federal lands
-> final straw...impose Marshall law at end of his term due to horrible condition of country and anoint him president for life.
What did I leave out?
Funny, but those countries where marriages are “arranged” by parents have a much lower divorce rate.
Just keeping the categories where they belong, together.
At the end of his second term, it is likely that 4 or 5 of the Justices on SCOTUS will be appointed by Obama.
Actually, it is misplaced matter of faith that voters have anything to do with it. Our voting system is so completely with any audit trail, any verification mechanism, that Stalin’s wisdom is the only one that pertains: “In democratic elections only who counts the votes matters.”
In liberal California we had a referendum, a little trickier to bugger, both because those who counted the votes are SEIU employees, and mostly black, and because it was black voters who made marriage a legal contact between a man and women. I may miss-remember the exact number, but 8% is my recollection.
These days, with voter tabulation managed by the SEIU, we may as well live in Venezuela or the old USSR. Citizens must try to grasp the significance of the unquestioned fact that votes cast in a precinct become the property of the state, out of sight of precinct workers, who once counted the ballots before they were removed to secure storage. Likewise, absentee ballots are counted by the SEIU. That is why union workers in government has destroyed the integrity of our voting system. The party in power has no reason to change this, and every reason to keep the public ignorant.
Polls probably have more integrity than votes because pollsters, at least some, benefit by predicting reliably. The SEIU has every reason, including physical risk, to keep the secret. We can’t talk about the secrets, rather like conjecture about who Obama really is, but we can look at the systems in place. The only conclusion is that our current system eliminates an audit trail. The vote, beginning with a mark or touch on a screen, or a mailed ballot, is counted entirely by SEIU workers, away from any neutral observer. The Germans eliminated this travesty a few years ago, returning to paper ballots. In the tradition of Nancy Pelosi, reading the voter information pamphlets is ridiculous. Just wait until the “elections” have passed and officials will tell us what we wanted, and what is to be imposed on us.
Jesus said marriage was between a man and women, and homosexuality is a sin, but what does he know?
