Local TV news on path toward death
New York Times reposted on World Net Dauly ^ | March 18, 2013 | By BRIAN STELTER New York Times

(NYTIMES) — With shorter stories and scarce coverage of politics and government, local television newscasts in the United States, like local newspapers before them, are suffering from “shrinking pains,” according to the Pew Research Center.

The diagnosis comes in the center’s 10th annual State of the News Media report, which will be published on Monday. The report, covering 2012, describes cutbacks in the reporting ranks of newspapers and television networks and a surge in efforts by politicians, corporations and others to tell their own stories.

“This adds up to a news industry that is more undermanned and unprepared to uncover stories, dig deep into emerging ones or to question information put into its hands,” the report’s main author, Amy Mitchell, wrote in an introduction.

I gave up watching local TV news years ago. I'm convinced that even a journalism school drop-out can always - at least - get a job with a local TV news station.

I for one won't miss them when they're gone.

I watch local news only for the weather, not that they are good at forecasting. I occasionally catch the sports. The “news” is simply a string of victims and miscreants. Not really interested in watching some poor soul cry their eyes out over a murder.

Bottom line, yeah, I could do without local news. Or TV news of any sort. I get my information off of the interwebs. :)

But where will I see videos of today's apartment fire and the interviewed resident who was carefully selected to be the least articulate person who lived there?

What do I need TV news for? If I want to be continuously lied to I’ll just call my ex-wife.

Great line. Best laugh I had today. I feel that way about all news and the liberal fools who broadcast it.

Actually, the study found local TV news making about as much money as ever.

Economic news coveraged more than doubled on the shows, weather, traffic and sports coverage increased, and other topics declined.

Local TV news
My biggest complaint is the local 24/7 news channel provided by Time Warner.
As if my bill wasn't big enough already, the cost to produce this show has to be huge.
When you complain they tell you the commercials pay the way. Yeah, sure.

Haven’t really watched the locals in years. It almost feels bizarre when I do land on the 6:00 news, like I hit some sort of time-warp.

People still watch this?

Plenty of news to cover, its just that when the talking heads are in the tank they
cannot report on the 'won' without being threatened by the dictatorship.

The “news” is simply a string of victims and miscreants.

You can say that again. Here in the great American southwest, the great bulk of the "news" is just one perp/crime after another, and if they are lucky, they squeeze in some weather and sports at the end.

In my town the local news is more biased than the national news outlets when they cover anything about politics. However, most of the “news” stories they cover are about puppies caught in a storm drain and other fluff pieces. The local government could be wracked in scandal and corruption and the local TV news station would not have a clue.

Oh no! Where will I go to find out what the findings were on the study of the day? Tonight’s news brought to you by the study that refutes last month’s study results on studies and their effect on studies. And what will I do without the latest report of who was murdered last night in North Philadelphia? Horrors.

Especially on the Spanish channel.
