Student who got kicked out of college over ‘Hot for Teacher’ essay sues for $2.2 million

A former student at Oakland University in the suburbs of Detroit is suing the school for over $2.2 million after he was kicked out in September 2011 for penning a salacious essay entitled “Hot for Teacher.”

Joseph Corlett, 57, a builder who now resides in Florida, filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, reports the Detroit Free Press. He claims the public university violated his First Amendment right to freedom of expression. He says he also suffered mental anguish and humiliation when he was forced to leave the school.

The suit names the school’s board of trustees and two high-ranking officials as defendants.

When Corlett wrote the essay, he was majoring in writing and rhetoric and working toward a bachelor’s degree. The class at issue was English 380: Advanced Critical Writing. The comely blond instructor was Pamela Mitzelfeld.

Corlett named his cursive composition “Hot for Teacher” after the sexually suggestive 1984 Van Halen song. Its undeniable thesis was that he was very attracted to Mitzelfeld.

“There is no way I’ll concentrate in class especially with that sexy little mole on her upper lip beckoning with every accented word,” the nontraditional student wrote, according to the Free Press. “And that smile.”

“I’ve had a few worries lately, the first that Lynn Anne, my wife, would read this. But now I don’t care. I suppose my fear is a good sign that I’m writing honestly,” he also wrote, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

From the article; “The lawsuit alleges that Mitzelfeld promised that students could write about anything. She hoped to get “the raw stuff,” says the suit.”

She got what she asked for.

What about what she said?

“The lawsuit alleges that Mitzelfeld promised that students could write about anything. She hoped to get “the raw stuff,” says the suit.”

The guy wrote about his wife, I’d bet he let his wife read it. I think the teacher got what she deserved.

“Usually the hot teachers are indoctrinating the younger male students. Table turned and flipped over on this one. Thanks for posting. LOL!”

No kidding: From the article;

Corlett said students in the English 380 class were told to write “raw things, a personal diary that maybe we wouldn’t want anyone to read.” He said the teacher had no objection to his earlier work, which earned an A, an essay about accidentally seeing women’s breasts.

“There is no constitutional protection against being offended,” Corlett said. “And while I am sympathetic to anyone’s feelings, I repeatedly asked for instruction. I was repeatedly told there were no topics that were out of bounds.”

Universities encourage this sort of behavior and it seems the teacher did as well. Typical though, that they come down with the hammer when it makes them unhappy.

My bet - he WINS...at least a sizeable (but probably undisclosed) settlement do drop his precedent-setting case!

I imagine is a woman had written this about a male teacher, the liberal school leaders would have not suspended her.

“Corlett said beyond the titillation, his suspension brings up legal issues about “the constitution, freedom of speech and academic freedom.” A fellow student said Corlett was known around campus for strong opinions on open carry laws: He argued voraciously that students should be allowed to carry guns to class. He wrote frequent opinion pieces on the subject for the Oakland Post student newspaper, where he reportedly had heated arguments with several students.

“If you can’t explore and write crazy things, and whatever, in an academic setting — This is supposed to be where you try out ideas, where you learn things — where can you learn?’” Corlett said.

Corlett told Langton he’s upset about his suspension as a tuition paying student and a taxpayer.

“I think there is a bit of ageism involved in this…Why is the standard any different for a 56 year old student than a 20 year old? What if I showed up 20 minutes late every day and they said, we’ll he’s 56, he’s allowed to come to class late. That’s ridiculous.”

I was right the first time. He’s an idiot. He either has a one track mind which disables him from writing about anything significant, or he’s a stalker.

Give him an F for freaking idiot.

“Where is the “sexy little mole on her upper lip?”

That’s the first thing I looked for too. Obviously, Joe was improperly drummed out of OU. His essay was either a work of fiction or descriptive of another teacher entirely. Reinstate him and pay the guy his $2.2mil plus atty fees.

He is a open carry advocate, and argued with college punks about it, he can’t be all bad.

That part of him makes perfect sense. The essay is still stupid and to sue over it is idiotic.

I think it’s funny. Liberal college teacher gets what she asks for then whines when it’s from a 57 year old guy who’s lived some life and knows how to play the game better than she can.
