Cooke wont enforce new state gun laws
Weld County Sheriff John Cooke said he wont enforce either gun-control measure waiting to be signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper, saying the laws are unenforceable and would give a false sense of security.
One bill passed Friday would expand requirements to have background checks for firearm purchases. Hickenlooper is expected to sign it into law within two weeks.
Earlier this week, Colorado lawmakers approved a 15-round limit on ammunition magazines. It also is awaiting the expected approval of the governor.
Cooke said Democratic lawmakers are uninformed but are scrambling in reaction to recent tragedies in the nation.
Theyre feel-good, knee-jerk reactions that are unenforceable, he said.
Cooke said the bill requiring a $10 background check to legally transfer a gun would not keep firearms out of the hands of those who use them for violence.
Criminals are still going to get their guns, he said.
Cooke said the other bill would also technically ban all magazines because of a provision that outlaws any magazine that can be altered. He said all magazines can be altered to a higher capacity.
Cooke said he, like other county sheriffs, wont bother enforcing the laws because it will be impossible for them to keep track of how the requirements are being met by gun owners. He said he and other sheriffs are considering a lawsuit against the state to block the measures if they are signed into law.
The vice president praised passage of the background check bill.
Congrats to Colorado House and Senate for passing universal background checks, read a tweet sent by the office of Vice President Joe Biden from his official @VP account.
It was followed by another tweet referring to the theater shooting that read, The families of Aurora deserved a vote and got one. Now U.S. Congress must act too.
Congress also is considering a number of new firearm restrictions.
Colorado is the first state outside the East Coast to significantly ratchet back gun rights after the theater and school shootings. Colorados gun debate was being watched closely because its considered a swing state with both a gun-loving frontier past and an unfortunate history of mass shootings, including the 1999 Columbine High School attack.
Are we going to stop all criminals from getting guns? No, said Democratic Rep. Beth McCann, a sponsor of the background checks bill. But are we are going to put a barrier there, make it more difficult for them? Yes.
The move to expand background checks would be one of the most sweeping responses by Colorado to the shootings last year in Aurora and at the elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
In Colorado, expanded checks have been a top priority for Hickenlooper, who called for the proposal during his State of the State address in January.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
I guess those that don’t learn from history are dammed to repeat it.
She make me making a difference but those that fight her should never let anyone particularly her constitutions know that the difference she makes is not against but in support of criminals.
Criminals are not hindered by the requirement of a background check.
love it!
Exactly. If I go up to C Street here in Greality, find Javier, show him a $50 bill and say ‘Yo Quiero Fuego’, Do you really think he’s gonna say, ‘Oh, no, no, not without a background check.’
People who already own them aren’t affected by the law. The Sheriff is basically saying that he won’t bring charges against those who sell banned items (such as against that NY soldier). Though, I agree with you in rather doubting that a gun store in Weld county could get inventory and go right ahead and sell them.
Hey Dr. Dan. Been a long time since the TRT days...
Cooke said the bill requiring a $10 background check to legally transfer a gun would not keep firearms out of the hands of those who use them for violence.
I wonder how the leftist extremists would react to a $10 tax on every abortion.
That’s a good point.
BTW, those are really nice paintings. I’ve been a pen-and-ink guy, probably from doodling in school.
Yes indeed. They might be again getting necessary.
Methinks it might be so...
Buying a gun should be as easy as voting. The same people who want no ID requirements to vote and even allow convicted felons to vote also want to restrict gun sales to law abiding citizens.
Well, that's the theory, anyway.
More often they learn how to cover up their screw ups until something really bad happens.
I agree but before you go to take on the usurper think first about how to do it successfully.
Without legitimate government there is but the realm of force and the appeals to the hearts of men. It is not enough to simply declare our allegiance the cause of liberty & constitutional law. We must work to find a way to restore and defend these critical objects of free civilization.
Until we have such a plan it would be wise not to throw out the advantages of subterfuge, infiltration, and surprise. It is more than likely if we are to bring this monster down we shall have to do so from with in.
Backlash is a comin'!
Sheriff Maketa releases statement regarding gun control stance
Historically, any citizen would be allowed to speak if they arrived at the Capitol early and signed up on testimony records. Although sign up sheets were in place and citizens including myself signed up, we were completely disregarded. Minutes after I signed up to testify, I learned a different process would be utilized and testimony was based on three categories: experts, preferred witnesses, and public witnesses. No explanation was provided to define expert or preferred witness. I was told this decision was made by the senate president and the chairperson of the hearing committee. Additionally, experts would have no time constraints and all others would be restricted to three minutes.
As I made my way out of the Capitol, I was shocked at the number of people who attended these hearings. It's estimated the number of people in attendance reached 1,000. I spoke to several and was told they just wanted their voice to be heard.
I am not sharing this because of the outcome of the hearings that day; rather I am sharing this because of the process implemented and the faces of all those citizens that were never permitted to participate in the process. Government is supposed to be by the people, for the people and on this day, they were crushed and kicked to the side. Special interest coalitions and hand picked experts with no relevant expertise trumped our citizens.

LOL I’d be happy if my ugly ole UPS guy delivered me some SKS mags, but alas, there are nearly none to be had. At this time.
The CO Dems have underestimated the resistance to their anti-constitutional laws. Now they are going to face the whirlwind of defeat in 2014 and recall elections.
