PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A shipyard worker who set fire to rags aboard a nuclear submarine because he wanted to go home was sentenced to a little more than 17 years in federal prison Friday for the blaze that transformed the vessel into a fiery furnace, injured seven people and caused about $450 million in damage.

"Casey James Fury also was ordered to pay $400 million in restitution..."

Good luck with that.

About three weeks later, Fury set a second fire outside the crippled sub, again because of anxiety. That fire caused no damage. He pleaded guilty to two counts of arson in November.

i hope the next 17 years are filled with anxiety from the time this POS wakes up in the morning till it cry's itself to sleep...

Do not go home. Go directly to jail and you will not collect $200.

I think he should serve the first two months aboard a sub in a ballast tank.

Makes me miss all those long days in the shipyard waiting for some union bag dragger to pull a stunt like this. Welding going on all over the ship, bags of rags and cans of flammables lying everywhere, hatches fouled by trunks and hoses and cables, and deck plates missing so if the lights go out you break a leg.

Had a 300 pound manufacturer's rep dump the entire refrigeration load of a giant air conditioning unit into the engine room. He was the first one to pass out. The shipyard had to use a crane to hoist him out the trunk. Spent three hours wearing an EAB (emergency air breathing) while clearing the space.

After reading the article, I’m convinced that the guy’s a pathological arsonist. They’d better watch him in the big house.

Wow what a story.
And of course I’m sure the EPA was there to arrest him upon regaining consciousness for the ozone layer attack.

I wonder if his new “colleagues” will wonder exactly what he’ll do to “go home early”, whether it presents a threat, and what they may do to prevent a “recurrence” of the shipyard incident that may impact them...

caused about $450 million in damage.
Casey James Fury also was ordered to pay $400 million in restitution by a judge who weighed his lack of criminal record

So... having no prior record was worth $50 million ?

He could have just said he was sick and had to go home. Now he has a new home for 17 years.

I have heard that less than 30% of the population of 18 to 25 year olds are suitable candidates for military service. The rest are ineligible because of prior drug use, an arrest record or some physical limitation.

Gives great confidence in the general population available for hire doesn’t it? This sorry A mental midget is a poster child for that concern.
