The Holland-Dozier-Holland team had produced one big hit for the Four Tops along with a number of lesser successes. This was one of them, and it came in at #36 on its way to the Top 20.

Trivia question: Name a single that was the biggest seller of the year, but never made #1 on the charts for any given week. Answer: California Dreamin.
John Phillips had written the song back in 1963, but it was not until Barry McGuire introduced the future Mamas & Papas to producer Lou Adler in 1965 that they got a chance to record it as background singers for McGuires version. Adler was one of the great geniuses of the business, and he let them record their own version with Bud Shank on alto flute, P. F. Sloan on guitar and the Wrecking Crew musicians in attendance. Shanks flute solo and Sloans guitar intro constitute two of the greatest moments in the history of popular music.
The group had their own unique mix of harmony and counterpoint, and Adler knew how to make the most of them. Its a simple tune in D minor, but incredibly beautiful and absolutely unforgettable. Its still my all time favorite song and performance. When Cass Elliots voice rises above the others at 2:19, its sheer magic and worthy of a handkerchief.
The song got air play on West Coast radio stations in the late summer of 1965 and very slowly moved east, market by market. I first heard the song on WIBG in Philadelphia on a snowy Saturday morning in December. I got cold chills and it wasnt from the snow. In early 1966 the song broke all over again, but this time nationally, and it began a steady climb on the charts. This week it peaked at #4. It was a sleeper, and in the end it was the top selling single of 1966.

Years before Peter Asher became Linda Ronstadts producer, he and Gordon Waller were a successful duo. This song was credited to Bernard Webb, which was an alias for Paul McCartney. This is one of those songs the Beatles gave away. This week it came in at #26 on its way to the Top 10.

Donizetti is still performed today, but who remembers Cilea? Another work that graced the opera houses in the early years of the 20th Century but has disappeared.

I’ve been great! Still working at a job I love and now I have
2 gorgeous granddaughters that I’d love to see more but they live about 8 hours away by car.
My son is still in the AF and stationed in Oklahoma. I just adopted (what was I thinking!!!) two orange kitties who entertain us and also drive us nuts!

John Sebastian had been a part of a music scene that included the members of the Mamas & the Papas, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds and Barry McGuire. They all reached stardom within a year of each other. Sebastians group had a string of hits in the mid-Sixties, and this one came in at #25 on its way to the Top 10.

My list of favorite art songs and arias consists of a plethora of works that will probably not be known long after I go to my rest.
Even with the "works" of our own age - I was watching the Super Bowl the year Mick Jagger did the Halftime show. When he broke into a work that is well known by everyone in our generation, my youngest son looked at me and said "He knows "Get No?"
OY!
Where are the survivors of the massacre at Benghazi? The silence of the Obama Regime on this question is deafening!
