Now if a gun is fired, police will be able to know where that gun went off within 25 meters and property managers around here say it has already started to bring some extra security.
The ShotSpotter System has been in Springfield for four years but this is an expansion that is already getting results. The concerns are going to be there but not as much, if you see the data on crime now in the North End it has declined, said Maria Perez from the North End of Springfield.
By getting to the locations faster, police say they have taken more guns off the street and made more arrests.
The hope is also that this technology will deter any violence from occurring in the City of Springfield.

“Should be fun on the 4th of July. And in Chicago”..
Dang your fast. I was thinking the same thing but you beat me to it.
Oh Springfield! Is that Springfield Illinois, Missouri,Massachsetts,or Ohio? I know I’m too lazy to do the link but then I never do takes too long on dialup.
Actually since you mentioned Chicago they do have noise monitors around both airports spotted in residential areas. Whether that played a role in the shooting they had near Midway airport was never reported. But they did nail the wetback drug dealer living in a nearby suburb who popped the cop pretty quickly.
There is no way to beat the original poster of the thread to the first post.
Whenever you hear a city seeking bids for “city-wide wi-fi”, think of this stuff. As with the red-light cameras, these gunshot triangulation systems depend on it. That some citizens will also get to use the wi-fi network is secondary.
Let's see...how would I foil "shotspotter"? Perhaps by having compatriots also fire weapons at locations remote from where I was going to, and at, or close to, the same time.
Sounds like an excellent way to pull cops away from where I intended to "hit" with any organized nefarious activity.
“Should be fun on the 4th of July.”
Can the system even TELL the difference btw a pistol shot and, say, an M80?
no.
nor can it tell the difference with a plastic small soda bottle being popped.
this is just warrantless searches based on “guilty until proven guilty.”
.22 subsonic shorts take care of most of the critters and won’t set off the shot spotters. That’s what I hear.
Two blasts with a shotgun ... to the shotspotter gizmo.
You and your compadres synchronize your watches
and take them all out simultaneously.
Except they probably also have "traffic" or "security" cameras focussed on the spotters.
"You and your compadres synchronize your watches and take them all out simultaneously."
Gotta get the cameras, too. Better to just fool'em with multiple simultaneous "bangs".
Unfortunately, our electronic and computer geek colleagues are providing the tools for a truly hard-core tyranny that will make the "Big Brother" of "1984" novel infamy look like a blind wuss. Drones, body scanners, microcameras, and on and on. And our legislators are NOT keeping up laws to prevent their use.
Balaclavas? Spray paint? Aerosol adhesives? Firecrackers?
