With a requirement for background checks at gun shows bogged down in a Senate committee and the end of the legislative session looming, gun control advocates are steamed.
“I am extremely frustrated. I’m angry. I’m disappointed,” said Debbie Kuidis, a retired Albuquerque Police Department deputy chief who has been lobbying for House Bill 77. “What are they doing?”
The legislation sponsored by Rep. Miguel Garcia, D-Albuquerque, would require private sellers at gun shows to have background checks done on prospective buyers before they make a sale.
Garcia’s bill, which has had the support of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, passed the House and one Senate committee and was sitting Wednesday on a clogged calendar in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Chairman Richard Martinez, D-Espanola, hadn’t scheduled it to be heard.

Anglos should avoid buying property in northern NM for the same reasons - you run into some strange dynamics, especially with families that have "Land Grants" from the Spanish Crown that go back 400 years.
Yes, even the ABQ area, some land grant descendants have put up signs saying the land is not for sale. Buyers have to be aware of more than the fine print in the bill of sale.

Californians all want to be in Sante Fe. A guy I know moved onto Chilili land and one night his house got shot at. He emptied a 30 round magazine out of three different windows in his house and has been left alone ever since.
I’m not familiar with NM, but I know a guy from New Mexico who moved up here. I think his family was one of the old-timers. He’s normally a laid back guy, but he has a special dislike for Californians.

These bills were submitted by legislators who have swallowed the enviro-radical Kool-aid that the sky is falling if we produce more fossil fuel energy. The state senate bill has as sponsor a school teacher from Las Cruces who was just elected last fall. He's just following the party line. The house bills are from a Santa Fe enviro-radical who believes everyone should take public transportation or ride a bicycle and live using solar energy for heat and windmills for electricity (Santa Fe is pretty much a fantasy world anyway).
All of these bills went down in flames and never made it out the committees they were assigned to. One reason is the fiscal impact reports (FIR) produced by the state agencies impacted by the legislation. They detail how much it would cost the state in either revenue or additional employees to implement the legislation. FIRs also give clues to the legislators as to agency thinking (agencies can't directly lobby for or against legislation - only the agency director can testify and answer questions from committee members). One FIR says in part the following:
ENMRD projects that impact from the bill [in] New Mexico on oil and gas development could be staggering. HB 335 would apply to all new wells in New Mexico that use hydraulic fracturing. A very high percentage of new wells incorporate the hydraulic fracturing process; last year, over 1600 new wells were completed. New wells are usually drilled at a depth between 5,000 and 15,000 feet, with many producing at 9,000 to 13,000 feetet. Many of the new wells also extend horizontally for thousands of feet. These wells often cost several million dollars to complete.
As I said, all never got beyond the starting gate but like the gun control legislation, lib/left radicals never give up and will be back again for another bite of the apple.

That “fossil fuel” terminology is a 60s-liberal (AKA: Hippies) leftover that keeps showing up from the left. Beware when it is used.
The “super” majority of the O&G industry have since rejected the idea that we are producing the remains of pre-historical “carbon-based life”.
Rather we are near unanimous in regarding O&G as a natural product of a dynamic Earth.

Scary that he's swallowed the enviro line so completely. More scary that he's educating young folks to believe it too.
Kuidis has been non-stop on radio supporting this, she had family murdered and the murderer used a firearm. I understand her being emotional on the issue, but wish she would realize if someone wants to murder another person they don’t need a firearm. I also wish she would understand if her sister (I think it was her sister) had been armed and could have defended herself she would be alive today.
Why do they need signs? If they don’t want to sell then don’t.
