Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ (born December 17, 1936) is the current pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected on March 13, 2013, and taking the regnal name of Francis I. Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.

After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

As has been posted, popes always exchange their given names for the name they would like to be be known by in the ecumenical world. Usually, they choose a name from a religious figure in history whom they would like to emulate.

Nothing is wrong with that. Why does a woman change her birth name to that of her husband? It would seem this is a much nobler reason.

(No throwing rocks, now...I just asked a question and made a comment on it...)

“Peter was the small hard pebble. He had that nickname all of his life.”

Your ignorance is quite impressive. So, Jesus spoke in Greek, not in Aramaic, to the Disciples, huh? LOL!

Funny, I feel so pessimistic about the country’s future right now, but I feel very optimistic about the future of the Church

me too, but the church has been around for 2,000 years and has gone through a lot worse timesthan this...the ountry has only been here for 250 or so years...and is right now in the worst situation that she has ever been in.....pray a LOT for her and Vote accordingly.

I hope he is enough of a servant of Yeshua to sell the vatican and give the money to the poor like Yeshua said.

Yeshua said nothing of the kind....the Vatican and her treasures are for the benefit of mankind...want to see a work of Michaelangelo, drop in at the Vatican....if the church were to sell all the art etc therein, who could afford it and where would it go??? make sense, the church accumulated these treasures over 2000 years and have held them for YOUR benefit.....without the church, you would have never seen them....never.

No, Yeshua told Peter that he was a small hard pebble, and that Yeshua himself was the rock.

read the passage VERY CAREFULLY..Jesus Definitely names Peter as the "rock".....for 2,000 years people have accepted and believed it....nice of you to straighten everyone out!

Only Christ forgives sins, not men, not ever. Its false and blasphemous doctrine.

Mark I would not bother, the Holy Spirit will enlighten the ones who want to see, want to know Jesus and want to have a relationship with only him. God knows the heart, he knows the number of hairs on our head. To argue about Peter, Petros and Solo Scriptura is fruitless, we pray for our Catholic brothers that they may see and know Jesus, unencumbered in dogma, rules, doctrines and traditions. That they read and meditate on his word and really know him. That they know love over rules, compassion over religiosity, faithfulness over repetitive prayers and mutterings and know that Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, he is the Rock, the Keystone and our Savior.

Like Luther's dogma of Sola Scriptura?

If you find Luther or his dogma in the Bible, let us know.

And which Scriptures should we meditate on, the Books handed down by the Apostles, or Luther's abridged Bible?

Only an authority outside Scripture can determine the canon of Scripture.

Are you the authority? Luther? A group of first century Jews? I don't recall any of them being mentioned in the Bible.

Catholics choose to ask these obvious, logical questions, because we serve Truth. It's something that all Christians should do.

Out of respect to the new Pope, and to let you have your celebratory thread, I won’t discuss this on this thread. You may take it up with me on another thread, OR you may freepmail me about it, and I will discuss it there.

noone denies that...of course Christ forgives sin....it is against Him that we sin....however, He chose an earthly path by which we may seek forgiveness.....confess to a priest and he will indeed confer on you the forgiveness oif Christ.....simple!

I trust The Holy Spirit with my confessions and forgiveness.

It is extremely convenient to have a direct line to God.

Ummm no Jesus said the only way to the father was through him. No priest is needed as they are just men not divine. Pray in Jesus name to God is all thats needed its all in the scriptures it couldn’t be more clear. No man can get you in touch with god or absolve you of your sins, Pray to Christ, period, anything else is blasphemy.

For years Pagans and Nicolaitans have accepted the Greek mistranslation of the original Hebrew.

So what!

Yeshua as the Rock is the central theme of the entire Bible. (ask Paul)

Only a trivial reader would fail to see the error of anyone but Yeshua as the Rock. Only a trivial reader would fail to see and understand the stern rebuke of Peter only verses away. Yeshua always makes it impossible to read him wrong, unless, of course, you are of the adversary’s family.

Yeshua, like his disciples spoke only in Hebrew, because he “came unto his own...”

Yeshua never had occasion to speak in Aramaic because his ministry was not to the minute handful of Aramic speakers in the region. Also Harrod’s regime was distinctly Hebrew speaking, as all Edomites were.

All Christians know that, on the Cross, Jesus Christ said “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani.” And all well read Christians know that those words are in Aramaic, not in Greek or Hebrew or what have you. What comic books have you been reading that told you that Jesus Christ and his Disciples did not speak in Aramaic with one another?

Stop digging yourself into a deeper hole. If you don’t even know what language was spoken by Christ with his disciples, don’t go trolling into Catholic threads and displaying your ignorance on the origin if the name Peter.
