California Seizes Guns As Owners Lose Right To Keep Arms

Wearing bulletproof vests and carrying 40-caliber Glock pistols, nine California Justice Department agents assembled outside a ranch-style house in a suburb east of Los Angeles. They were looking for a gun owner who’d recently spent two days in a mental hospital.

They knocked on the door and asked to come in. About 45 minutes later, they came away peacefully with three firearms.

California is the only state that tracks and disarms people with legally registered guns who have lost the right to own them, according to Attorney General Kamala Harris. Almost 20,000 gun owners in the state are prohibited from possessing firearms, including convicted felons, those under a domestic violence restraining order or deemed mentally unstable.

“What do we do about the guns that are already in the hands of persons who, by law, are considered too dangerous to possess them?” Harris said in a letter to Vice President Joe Biden after a Connecticut school shooting in December left 26 dead. She recommended that Biden, heading a White House review of gun policy, consider California as a national model.

As many as 200,000 people nationwide may no longer be qualified to own firearms, according to Garen Wintemute, director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis. Other states may lack confiscation programs because they don’t track purchases as closely as California, which requires most weapons sales go through a licensed dealer and be reported.

Link from your link : “Are you too sick to own a gun?” http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/01/21/are-you-too-sick-to-own-a-gun-nbc-news-lays-out-scary-scenarios-in-new-gun-control-push/

Points out that CO needs to step it up in reporting:

The data, through April 2012, shows that in Colorado, more than 11,000 mental health records weren’t reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. The study ranks the fifty states by identifying the five states that have submitted the most mental health records when controlling for population, and then comparing the rest of the country to those standards. In those top five states — Virginia, California, Washington, Michigan and New York — 830 records per 100,000 residents have been submitted. Colorado, the report says, would have to submit 11,192 records to join the top ranking states.

// “Colorado conducted 336,296 gun background checks in 2011 using this very incomplete data according to the study, which notes that 30,885 mental health records have been submitted in the state. Colorado falls somewhere in the middle compared to states across the country and is certainly doing a much better job reporting than the states at the bottom, which in some cases have submitted as few as three records.” //

In fact, law-abiding citizens might even be sympathic: from article at #75,

Those sort of 'law-abiding' citizens are the type who simply do what they're told - never questioning whether the representatives of law and order actually have the jurisdiction or authority to compel their compliance.

I have no use for them.

Living in California is like living in a mental institution. By that fiat, everyone in California should be in jail if they own a gun, a knife or a box cutter ( all of which have been used in horrible crimes. Anyone remember 9/11?)

(As an aside, it crossed my mind that vampires cannot enter a home without an invitation, either.)

Comparing them to blood sucking parasites fits ... but I usually think of ticks. ;^)

ticks... yeah, that's even better. Really, I'm still stuck with her inviting them in. Why was she even the one to answer the door, opening it to a GROUP of strangers? And then she says she understands...is that how beaten down people get? Heh, I wonder what her husband says. This is yet another cautionary tale, on several levels. G'night!

[[Almost 20,000 gun owners in the state are prohibited from possessing firearms, including convicted felons, those under a domestic violence restraining order or deemed mentally unstable.]]

Deemed mentally unstable by whom? That’s the catch- states like cali and new york are desperately tryign to get mwedical records into a national database so that IF anyone has ever taken anti-depressents, anti-anxiety, anti psychotic drugs etc can then ‘legally’ be declared unfit to own a gun even if there has never been an instance of threat from said person

Folks- we ARE losing our rights to own guns- and they are taking our rights away through htese backdoor means declarign it’s ‘for outr own safety’- I hear in NY now, doctors are REQUIRED to ‘screen patients’ abotu whether they are ‘depressed’ or not, and from what I understand it’s one of the first questiosn asked when beign examined- Our nations doctors are turnign into state controlled INFORMERS- where ocne they were under oath to ‘do no harm’ they are now MANDATED by these states to actually do harm by divulging to the government thigns that shoudl be doctor patiuent ONLY information

This has been in the works for a long time now- small town docs were leavign the practices to ‘work on digitizing databases of patient profiles’ (meanign making it readily available all over the coi8ntry with just hte touch of a button) and it is NO accident that NY gov and mayors are pushing so hard to confiscate firearms and regualte behaviors such as food consumption etc- if obese peopel are foudn to intake too much ‘junk’ then docs all over the count5ry will know about said person and will be ‘on alert’ and the govenrment WILL be notified so that said person is taxed more and has to pay higher premiums for socialized healthcare

NONE of what’s currently happenign is a mistake- it’s all carefulyl correographed and has been i nthe works for soem time now-

[[The Left simply does not have a clue about the box they are opening.]]

Oh yes they do- see my previous post- they know damn well what they are starting, and htey know damn well that America (for the msot part) will NOT stand up for her rights any longer- A few states might- but htose that do WILL BE financially crippled by the govenrment until eventuially there is no choice but to cave in

[[or if just saying the wrong thing or seeking mental help is enough on its own.]]

For now, I imagine there must be an actuakl mental diagnosis- but mind you- once the foot is in the door- once they can begin confiscating based on mental concerns, the door is wide open to ‘interpretation’ and you can bet that they will take every last damn inch they can and it WILL get to the point where just hte word of a nieghbor informant (Remember, our dear leader wanted neighbors spying on nieghbiors reportign ‘anythign suspicious’ by goign to hte gubmint website and filling out reports) who will only have to say “I think they are actign strange’

This is a VERY bad road we are going down folks- We are abotu to lose our most basic right to self defense agaisnt a tyranical guvamint

Yeah- they’ll put out another ad- or mount a ‘lawsuit’ which will get nowhere- just as it won’t get anywhere in NY-

[[Will the cops ever realize that it is those who are doing the confiscating under the color of authority that are breaking the law??]]

What do they care? Who’s goign to stop them from breakign hte law? They are free to do what they want- The suopreme court won’t even stop them by demandign that our government actually OBEY the constitution

[[Real criminals shoot back at cops. Most law-abiding citizens don’t. ]]

Which is why the ‘new enemy’ is now the mentally ill law abiding citizen with no priors- We even have our own law enforcement turnign on us- (and being prohibitted from doign hteir actual jobs of deterrign TRUE crimes because of lawsuits that protect real criminals- law abiding citizens apaprently have no such laws to protect us- We used to- a little work called the consitution of the united states of america’- but apaprently, laws protecting criminals now trump even our constitution)
