SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Mormon church leader says the faith is largely in line with President Barack Obama on what needs to be included in a comprehensive immigration bill.
Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' governing First Presidency, joined 13 other faith leaders at a private meeting on the issue with Obama on Friday.
Uchtdorf said Obama urged the church leaders to stand together and ensure the U.S. remains a place where immigrants can come in a lawful way and not live in fear. The president expressed support for a bill that would streamline the legal immigration system and provide a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
"He was talking about his principles and what he said was totally in line with our values," Uchtdorf told The Salt Lake Tribune.
His comments are the strongest signs yet that the church is sympathetic to an overhaul effort that many Mormon politicians, including Utah's congressional delegation, have rejected. The state's two Senate and four House members have opposed what they call amnesty for illegal immigrants.

#1...NOW we see what Romney would have done -- if this is what the LDS Church wanted all along!
#2...The Lds church's stance couldn't have anything to do with articles like this, could it? (See 2 LDS branch presidents in Utah deported to Guatemala, El Salvador)
#3...As I've repeatedly said, the Lds church can be quite liberal when it wants to be...Supporting abortion with ALL Kinds of exceptions. Supporting homosexual rights, etc...
NO abortion!! NO homosexual rights!! NO amnesty!! NO path to citizenship for illegal alien trespassers!!
Immigration proposal gets evangelical support
Evangelical Christians prepare for largest ever grassroots push on immigration
Why Evangelicals are the new partners for immigration reform
That’s all that needs to be said Jim.
NO to all of them!! Mass stupidity.
(Thanks for the links)
I can visualize circumstances when/where the Church of Latter Day Saints is fragmented by ideas/proposals on immigration.
I can visualize non-monolithic segments (like Evangelicals) as being somewhat fragmented on some social issues.
It's always a bit tougher to say the same thing about the Mormon church and the Catholic church when edicts come down from Salt Lake City & the Vatican.
Exactly.
They talk about "social justice"...where's the "social justice" for those who've been waiting their turn on a list to come here...but don't have the "luxury" of living closer to an American border (to cross illegally?) ????
These are one-way "social justice" con artists who seemingly -- deliberately -- turn a blind eye to families in other parts of the world who likewise want both economic opportunities as well as possible increased security from their current locales.
And there it is. Rotten to the core.
bump
The article itself says Uchdorf claim was that he was against illegals becoming citizens.
Let me get this right: I sneak into Saudi Arabia, Mexico or Monaco, sign-up for welfare, food benefits, free housing, free tuition and use their emergency rooms for my medical needs and then expect them to give me citizenship? Yeah, okay.
Funny, I’ve been LDS for 52 years and the only thing I remember ever getting Churchwide council was to support defense of mairrage!
So in your world ... if the LDS DOMA, then it must be bad?
Isn’t that how your standard logic Colofornian?, High Priestess of the Non-Denomination Inquisition.
I am not aware that there has ever been any dissention about this from either side of the political spectrum.
It figures. They show themselves for what they are.
Where were you in 1978 then when Lds changed its tune churchwide on accepting blacks into the priesthood? My math tells me that was 34 3/4 years ago.
* So, Mormon hierarchy excluded blacks -- and then late in the 20th century not
(And you said the above as if all Churchwide councils were uttered in your lifetime)
* Mormons forced communism upon its people -- and then not (United Order)
* Adhered to theocracies under its first two "prophets" -- and then slowly drew back
* Said polygamy was a condition of the highest degree of glory -- and then not
* POLITICALLY Encouraged its Utah Territory voters to be Democrats -- and then told whole groups of people wholesale to "balance it out" as Republicans as statehood approached
On this last point, here's the source:
"In order to gain the senates approval for statehood, Utah was required to normalize its political allegiances. The Church disbanded the Mormon Peoples Party but feared that a mass Mormon migration to the Democratic Party would displease Republican senators. Church leaders sent Apostle John Henry Smith to visit LDS congregations. It was possible to be a faithful Mormon and a Republican, he explained to the amazement of many LDS faithful. In 1893, the Church even asked some specific families to become Republicans, a move that would be unimaginable today".
See All About Mormons: learn the truth about mormons...
So there ya go. The Mormon church is such a cult that it could simply send Lds "apostle" John Henry Smith around to Mormon stakehouses and make the announcement that "some of you need to become Democrats, and some of you need to become Republicans" ... and "presto!" 'Tis done!
“Funny, Ive been trapped in the LDS cult for 52 years and the only thing I remember ever getting Churchwide council was to support defense of mairrage!”
Says it all... I wish better for you.
Prospects for conversion are few in the US and missionaries are busy in latin countries lying to residents about a "restoration of the gospel" and trying to convince them that their Christian faith, (usually catholic) is bogus.
