Officials: 80 Percent Of Recent NYC High School Graduates Cannot Read
CBS NY ^

Posted on 03/07/2013 3:11:25 PM PST by SMGFan

It’s an education bombshell.

Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system.

The number of kids behind the 8-ball is the highest in years, CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday.

When they graduated from city high schools, students in a special remedial program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College couldn’t make the grade.

They had to re-learn basic skills — reading, writing and math — first before they could begin college courses.

-- Illiteracy isn't even on their radar screens. --

In this case, I don't think "can't read" is synonymous with illiterate. The requirement is reading plus comprehension, and the reader is tested by answering questions that test comprehension.

No doubt, some of them are illiterate, meaning they don't recognize many common words put in front of them; but I;ll guess the majority suffer from limited vocabulary, which is slightly different from "illiterate". I'm going to guess they read at a 5th grade level, but 10th grade level is required to make it through the first year of college.

I am guessing that a Regents’ diploma isn’t required to enter a NY college anymore.

More low-information voters. They don’t need to know how to read, just vote. The much-vaunted Axelrod outreach to inner cities won re-election for O’Bummer last year.

I have an idea, lets set the money given to the schools per student back to where it was that they used to pass a reading test.

It will save Billions!

With Bloomberg in the midst of an unprecedented third term as mayor, you’d think he’d have to bear some responsibility for this.

I and my three children were proficient readers at least a year prior to enrolling in grade one. We are not necessarily a whole lot smarter than the average, but just possibly being nurtured in a family environment was helpful. Government interventions, however well intentioned, are not adequate substitutes.

“I had enough curiosity to teach myself how to read before I got to the 1st grade.

What is wrong with people?”

It’s called the Bell Curve.

If Bloomturd had thousands of children, this would be “them”.

No “Reading, Written or Arithmetic”, kids! But especially, no 17 ounce Coke.

They reason these kids can’t read is because of COKE, and it ain’t the soda kind, Bloomturd.

It’s called the Bell Curve.

A traditional Bell Curve would dictate that most people could read.

There would be a small segment that either could not read or could not read well, followed by a large segment that could read, followed by a small segment that was able to read exceptionally well.

What the hell do teacher pensions have to do with this? Are you always such a dumb@ss, or did you practice up before posting this? Teachers have to teach the curriculum they are given, they cannot deviate from it. How about PARENTS reading with their children or teaching them something besides how to operate a TV set?

I have mixed feelings about phonetics. I was educated by the nuns in the early ‘50, and, for some reason, they did not teach it. Instead, we learned to read “by sight”, that is, we were taught to recognize each word without analyzing it phonetically. To this day, I still remember the very first word we learned, “look”. See, the nun said, as she wrote it out on the blackboard, it has two eyes. The advantage was we mastered reading very quickly; the disadvantage was I have always had difficulty spelling.
