The NRA’s flip flop on African Americans(Uber barf alert)
salon.com ^ | 3 March, 2013 | Natasha Lennard

When the gun control debate focused around black militants taking up arms, the fulcrums were very different. Indeed, both the NRA and President Ronald Reagan spoke against armed citizens when African American men patrolled neighborhoods brandishing firearms in response to racial violence. The Panthers were not the “well-regulated militia” that the white, conservative stalwarts of Second Amendment advocacy had in mind.

Hence the hypocrisy now of the gun group appealing to African Americans — invoking the Civil Rights movement — to lobby support against gun regulation. The NRA hired Internet star and gun advocate Colion Noir to feature in a video, posted on YouTube Friday, to appeal to the black community. In the video, Noir says:

The same government who at one point hosed us down with water, attacked us with dogs, wouldn’t allow us to eat at their restaurants and told us we couldn’t own guns. [...] The only person responsible for your safety is you. Cops can’t always be there. Obama definitely can’t be there. Guy telling me to get rid of my guns when I need them the most, isn’t my friend, isn’t looking out for my best interests and doesn’t speak for me or the community that I’m part of.

As UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, author of “Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America,” wrote in the Atlantic: “Indisputably, for much of American history, gun-control measures, like many other laws, were used to oppress African Americans.” But what Noir’s monologue helpfully forgets is that when it came to black men taking up arms in the Civil Rights struggle, the NRA was on the other side of the gun control fence too.

She has made an assertion, let us see her back it up. Did the NRA support the ban on loaded open carry that was passed under Reagan in California, or not. There should be records. If it was, I bet that a majority of Democrats voted for it as well.

Of course, at the same time, or very shortly before, the Democrats supported segregation.

The NRA hiring a black man has made the left unhinged. This is awesome!

The same government who at one point hosed us down with water, attacked us with dogs, wouldn’t allow us to eat at their restaurants and told us we couldn’t own guns.

Other than mess halls and the ones in the Capitol building, the goobermint doesn't HAVE any restaurants. Oh, and for the rest of this moronic screed, "Uber Barf Alert" is right.

What we have to remember is what the political climate is at the time any legislation is up for a vote. Sometimes you lobby on offense, sometimes on defense. Sometimes you accept some legislation so that you don't get even worse legislation passed.

Were NRA & Manufacturers Complicit in the Gun Control Act of 1968?

The Ku Klux Klan, also known as the Democratic Party, has always been against the arming of slaves. The rewriting of history is a major political tool now being used by the party of dependent slavery.

Huey Newton and Bobby Seale standing in streets, armed with shotguns (Wikimedia).

Huey Newton, convicted of voluntary manslaughter of a policeman and seriously wounding another, convictions overturned on appeal, prosecutor refused to refile.

Then he shot and killed a 17 year old girl, but was released for lack of evidence. Pistol whipped his tailor, and fled to Havana to avoid prosecution. When he returned to the US, three other Black Panthers tried to murder a witness in the case, allegedly at his order. Two juries deadlocked, so the prosecution refused to refile.

(Oh, heck yeah. This is a man who needs a gun.)

Bobby Seale. One of the “Chicago Eight” convicted of trying to start a riot at the DNC convention in 1968.

Ordered the torture and murder of a Black Panther who had been discovered to be a police informant. Jury unable to reach a verdict. While being held in prison, another BP impregnated his wife, and that individual was found dead and mutilated.

Somewhat amazingly, he is still alive.

(However, for him to have a gun is questionable, at best.)

I take it Mizz Lennard would prefer that post-Civil War Democrat laws against blacks owning guns should still be the norm and blacks should sit down and shut up about their right to defend their lives. And keep your black hands off of those guns! Isn’t that about the essence of your complaint, Natasha? That’s a Russian name isn’t it?

I don’t admit this person is right in any way , but for the purposes of this response, lets say she is.

Does it make it ok to disarm them and place them back in the slavery of a tyranical government now?

The NRA is right. An Unarmed populace are Government slaves.

Yes, the NRA has hired an eloquent urban black man to support the Bill of Rights, and the insane left insists that it was both wrong to prevent everyone from open carry of loaded guns in 1967, and right to prevent black men from open or concealed carry of loaded guns today...

And many will buy into it....

It is worth noting that the NRA did not establish an official lobbying arm, the NRA-ILA until 1975. I find it very unlikely that they took a position on the California bill.

Before 1968, they tended to be mostly a training organization.

The Black Panthers were mostly a bunch of anti-American, murderous scum. Read David Horowitz’s experience with the Panthers to find out the truth. In his radical days from the sixties, he backed the Panthers until his secretary was murdered by one of them. along with the NOI they were the Black version of the Klan or Aryan Brotherhood.

Black Panthers were, and are a terrorist organization that calls for the destruction of the USA. Why should the NRA, or anyone else for that matter, support them? The author dishonestly conflates the Panthers with your average black urban resident who was fed up with urban crime. Therein lies the ruse in this fantasy piece. These were communist terrorists (who happened to be black racists) marching armed through America’s streets during a time of war. When the average black citizen marches with US against the tyranny of the anti-constitutional forces the media will never report it.

NRA needs younger execs, blacks were a prime area to expand NRA just like women were. Women need guns more then men because most of the criminals that prey on them are men. Women understand that once they get over the liberal mantra of guns are bad, better to be dead or raped then use a gun to kill the attacker just don’t cut it anymore. Same with blacks. Black women still hate guns because they still grieve over their dead kids killed by guns. Black men on the other hand live precariously every day as black criminals with guns are assaulting them and their love ones. They feel less of a man because they are less able to fend off gun toting criminal attacking them or their love ones. Guns are not evil but essential in their survival against armed criminals. In the inner city tactical wisdom rules the day. If criminals can get hi capacity mag and semi autos, law abiding black men want the same weapons against such criminals, because to do otherwise is street dumb. I think the NRA struck an inner city cord amongst law abiding black men, and I hope their old leadership recognize this opportunity. Gun rights is no longer a predominant white man issue, it now includes women, and it will get even stronger if it adds inner city minorities to the cause.

Another brain dead self-hating Jew writing on behalf of the blacks. Can you imagine if a white conservative decided to speak on behalf of blacks...?

I might be the only freeper who had a powerful Black Panther for a running buddy, it created some aggressive posturing in black clubs until he would let them know who he was, and then it was like being with a big mafia guy, the club would Kowtow to him.

A red herring to derail the current argument. What matters now is where the NRA stands at this moment in history. Where they stood 40 years ago is ancient history, whether true or not.
