A few salient facts are known about the Americans whose lives might be changed by a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage expected this summer.
About one in five gay and lesbian couples are raising children that are under age 18. Same-sex couples are less likely than traditional married couples to have health insurance covering them both. One in 10 men with a male partner or spouse is a military veteran. As many as 6 million Americans, roughly 2 percent of the population, have a parent who is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
These nuggets of demographic insight into same-sex couples were contained in an amicus brief filed last week in connection with two cases before the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of Californias gay marriage ban and the Defense of Marriage Act...
--snip--
Some of the controversy is rooted in a study done in the late 1940s. Sexologist Alfred Kinsey wrote in a passing reference that 10 percent of men had had same-sex experiences. That figure has stuck, in part, according to Gates, because gay activists cited it to make the case they could not be ignored.
Some opponents of gay marriage also say more research should be done into gay demographics, in part to correct common misperceptions on the size of the gay community. In several surveys, Gallup has found that Americans believe, on average, that 25 percent of the population is gay, several times higher than any research estimate.
I think serious data on this is important to inform the debate, said Peter Sprigg, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, which has argued that same-sex marriage is harmful to society. People have an exaggerated view of how many homosexuals there are in the population. They dont realize what a relatively small population it is....

In my younger days, I had a couple of girlfriends who were bi-sexual (not at the same time). I did not mind if they had relations with other girls the way I would have if they saw another guy. Perhaps your daughter will find a man willing to be her husband and father of her children, and be understanding of how she is.
Is she attracted by men at all, or is it just that she's attracted by women more?
Thank you for your respectful, intelligent and compassionate post. I most certainly do not hate your lovely daughter; she deserves understanding and love. Moreover I rejoice that she is seeking a “higher power.”
I do not know what factor(s), genetic, environmental or a combination lead to homosexuality. I also have a family member, raised in a very devout Catholic family (I am also a practicing Catholic), who is gay. However I do believe that homosexuality is an abnormality, just as depression is an abnormality. Fortunately depression has multiple modes of therapy while I am unaware that homosexuality has any.
But I am firmly and uncompromisingly opposed to gay marriage for many reasons. But you have my sympathy.
I expect to be flamed.
You got it. She is attracted to some men and men absolutely to her as she is a knockout like her mom. She’s just more attracted to women and wishes it wasn’t that way.
I did miss that. You should rest, knowing you have done everything you can do, and keep praying and yes, I will gladly pray for her.
Homosexuality is a sin, like gluttony, drunkenness, greed and other lusts, and as always we love the sinner and hate the sin.
We are all going to have to face our temptations and surrender them to God- and He will bring us to our knees to do it, right?
I don’t believe that people are born to be alchololics or obese, but that they are trapped in a yoke that they have not figured out how to hand over to Jesus to break.
May God bring you, and your family, deep peace and joy.
I don’t hate your daughter. Over the years I have known some very decent people who are gay. I mean that, leaving the sexual issues aside, you would rather have them around you than 95% of the rest of the people in the world. And you could leave the sexual issues aside, because it wasn’t something they pushed at you, though they were different degrees of “out.”
Some people are born that way, imo, there is some kind of miswiring in the brain. The moral and religious and political question is how we expect people to live with that miswiring. The Left says, how dare we call it miswiring.
In particular, a substantial number of lesbians have common facial features - a short high-bridged nose, rather broad apple cheeks, a determined chin. A greater proportion of lesbians than other women are afflicted with polycystic ovarian syndrome, which produces masculinizing hormones.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that many men exhibit a rather deeply held revulsion against a certain physical type - think how Reno, Shalala, Albright, Napolitano, Kagan, are treated here - it’s more than just their politics that sets men off. Some young women may retreat to the company of other women in the face of such rejection.
How many gay-lesbian couples can there even be? Don't they pair up gay-gay, lesbian-lesbian?
And how many gay-gay couples are training, I mean raising, someone else's kid with their knowledge?
“May God bring you, and your family, deep peace and joy.”
And to you and your family too.
Thank you
With over 25% representation in newsrooms and Hollywood (sometimes closeted) and open activism in that agenda in media, corporate liberal "diversity"/political re-education training, and academia, the misunderstanding by the ill informed public is understandable.
Wow. How enlightening! I’m so glad the Washington Compost uncovered this. Now, how about those statistics on AIDS, or life expectancy, drug use, alcoholism? It also won’t be reported that a small minority of homosexuals actually engage in monogamous relationships, most preferring anonymous sex, or polyamorous engagements. This is the real problem. The vocal homosexuals paint some sort of ‘quaint’ image of the lifestyle, knowing full well that the majority of their cohorts are involved with things the public would be disgusted with.
“....there is some kind of miswiring in the brain”
That is the way we have begun to maybe try to understand her. She sees it the same as she struggles so much in not wanting to be the way she is.
I’d post a picture of her but not that adept at it. She does have a somewhat wide face but you would definitely not pick her out of a line up as a lesbian as she is strikingly beautiful.
She should have been a boy with the throwing arm, hitting eye and pair of hands she had athletically. That fact threw her into women’s sports and the association with the more hardcore looking women you mention.
One thing for sure about her. No one that has ever come to know her has anything but kind words about what kind of person she is. A lesson for the rest of us as she has a heart of gold...... thanks Heartwood
Maybe because roughly 1 in 4 characters on TV is a GiBLeT. Few shows are without at least a token deviate. <
1994 - Edward O. Laumanns book, The Social Organization of Sex: Sexual Practices in the United States, was published. It has since become the most accepted study on the incidence of homosexuality in the U.S. population. The National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS) found that 2.8% of the male and 1.4% of the female population identified themselves as homosexual, lesbian, or bisexual.
10/08/2002 A Gallup Poll reported that Americans estimated 21% of men were homosexuals and 22% of women were lesbians.
10/18/2012 A Gallup Poll, the largest of its kind on record (more than 121,000 adults surveyed) revealed that only 3.4% of American adults publicly identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, with the highest percentage coming among the younger, less-educated non-whites. The percentage of self-reported LGBTQ Americans was much smaller than the general impression derived from their presence in popular culture and their perceived influence in liberal American politics.
That has to be absolute BS. 10% of homos are veterans?
Someone is cooking the books with this to push their agenda.
Well. Let’s leave your daughter’s photo off FR because there are some nasty people here.
There are many people with miswiring of one kind of another - my son has Asperger’s; I battle depression. God permitted it, but I don’t think it’s good, although with His help we may bring good out of it.
I don’t think anyone (well anyone normal) hates your daughter.
My wife has a problem with alcohol. If she drinks, she gets drunk. She likes it. She’d do this every day, if she could.
It got so bad it was a problem with her getting up in the AM and doing what she is supposed to do. She would fight and generally be a bitch when drunk.
In short, she has a weakness for alcohol —— just like her father, her sister, and a bunch of her relatives.
We cut out the booze pretty much from our lives. (She can be a social drinker at a party and reighns it in in public -— 2 drinks, tops, MAYBE once a month.)
It was tough and unpleasant.
I view “gayness” like alcoholism. The weakness may be genetic. It may be a habit. It may just be that way.
But it’s distructive and disruptive.
And your daughter can over come it, and should, just like my wife over came drinking.
The problem so many people have with the gay agenda is they purport that it is normal and should be celebrated.
No, it’s not. It’s a disorder and not normal.
It doesn’t mean the person afflicted by it is a bad person.
It means they have a weakness or problem with which people should help.
There are many organizastions that help people change from the “gay” life. The success rate is not 100% but it is substation, if a homosexual is not happy and wants to change. Many have become normal and raise families and marry; others remain celibate and are comfortable with that.
I can find a list of such organizatiosn if you want; some are faith based and some are secular. NARTH has a lot of info.
No one is born homosexual; no research however agenda driven by homosexual activists has ever been able to find any genetic or other phsyical connection.
People can and do change - either with help or sometimes totally on their own.
Unlike most people, she is unusually deaf to gossip, heavy handed opinions, hatreds, bigotry, swearing or other things negative. Please dont hate my kid.
Sexual identity is a choice.. What one chooses is what one chooses..
Why they choose what they choose can be mysterious but it is so just the same..
Some like this....... others like that......
I don’t like eggplant.. don’t really know why!... but I don’t..
Will eat it.. but only to be social.. others love the taste of it..
I suppose I could learn to like it ( IF ) I didn’t have so many other “better” options..
I am a man and can see that some women appreciate(understand) the beauty of women...
What is hard for me to understand is how other women see the beauty(sexually) in MEN!.. I do not see that..
It must be the eggplant thing.. sorta..
Oh!.. I’m not embarrassed that I do not like eggplant.. nor am I proud of it..
Just a personal choice.. (prison) could change that..
Under right circumstances I might eat eggplant and be happy for the chance.. if hungry enough..
“In several surveys, Gallup has found that Americans believe, on average, that 25 percent of the population is gay, several times higher than any research estimate.”
Gee, I wonder how that happened. May be it was the day when
they said Homophobia was abnormal behavior and homosexuality
is normal and necessary for the survival of the human species. It could be that homosexuality is natures way of
weeding out the human gene pool. But when the government
promotes it, it is genocide. Don’t ask me whats on my mind.
I don’t know, it’s just my attempt to see any useful
purpose in it.
OK. I find the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders more attractive than my wife. That doesn't mean I'm going to leave her to hook up with somebody I find more attractive. It's called being an adult.
If you thought one of the “tight ends” for the Dallas Cowboys was attractive I’d be more worried about you.
