Elections have consequences.
I won't say what military base I work at,but today my office was briefed about the impending sequestration. There were a few interesting points to come out of the meeting.
1. You have to take at least 8 hours a week LWOP (leave without pay). You cannot use sick or annual leave on those days off. You cannot take more then 30 hours a week because then you'd be able to apply for unemployment and the federal government is ensuring we can't utilize that avenue to supplement our income. So they take us but prevent us from taking from them. Smart.....
2. No more credit time, comp time, or overtime. If, in the performance of your job you're responsible for monitoring contractors, those contractors have to leave or you leave them unsupervised. Just imagine the legal entanglements that are soon to arise.
3. We have to take 176 hours, or 22 days, off with no pay (which we will NOT get back for all you who have been saying otherwise) between April 25 and September 22. If the sequester lasts longer and we end up taking more than 30 days of sequester then mandatory RIFs will take place and people will start losing their jobs.
That's the news as I have it now. I'll post more as it comes available. I'm going to bed, I can hardly keep my eyes open but I had to post this for all to see.
Properly done, the sequester would start attacking the spending problem at its source - the various welfare programs would be the first to get hacked. People would have to prove that they actually needed the assistance. No more school lunches. Severely limited food stamps, eliminate section 8 housing. No, absolutely no benefits for illegals. Get the freeloaders off the government dole, assist only those that have a proven need.
But you won’t see the food stamp president advocating any of that, and the Republicans are too chicken to say it.
Government workers don't pay taxes so they didn't get an increase...
Fatuous statement. ALL govt. workers are a drain on the economy. They produce nothing. Some are necessary but you can't prove just because they post on FR they are both necessary and responsible.
I’m not going to beat up on federal employees but Lou Barletta nailed it on FOX this morning. A government that would rather turn criminals loose than let some federal employees go is too big and out of control.
There are plenty of SLACKERS in the civilian world that can’t be fired either because of laws. People on the outside make huge money for doing next to nothing. I have many friends who work on Wall Street and get huge bonus’ and other goodies and they accepted federal money for Wall Street. I imagine what you do doesn’t help society either.
Oh and we have been hearing the boo hoo from civilians for 8 measly percent unemployment for YEARS! Get over it...92 percent are still working. What a bunch of brats crying over nothing.
Excellent suggestions. Chance of implemenation: zero. We both know that Zippy just wants to use this situation as a political football.
Yippie ki yay.....
The press has been talking about this for a couple years, and yet people even here don’t understand this. We are an incredibly ill-informed nation incredibly ill-served by our Fourth Estate.
Entitlement spending must be reined in.
In the private sector the spigots got turned off years ago. If you watch corporate earnings reports you constantly see street beats on earnings, but shortfalls in revenues. This means the companies are becoming more efficient.
You cannot say the same about government.
Well, the shareholders are getting restless.
J was describing how it’s done in the private sector. I also predicted the government would do it in a way that would maximize disruption, and so they are.
On the whole, federal pensioners live at the highest standards of anyone in the country.
The problem is that it seems all of here at FR want lower government spending. Except it means people losing their jobs. Just like the private sector.
I can feel bad for you individually, but I don’t feel bad in general. Come join us on the barricades.
-——mandatory RIFs -——
There it is.....the dreaded term RIF. In my younger days as a Navy Civilian employee there were actually RIF’s.
The Reduction in force didn’t affect engineers, the clerks were the ones that got RIFFED. It’s comforting to learn the term has not been lost in Federal Employment lore
Oh, those evil contractors who the government depends on but loves to hate.
No sympathy here. Be thankful you still have a job.
“...additional good guys will die. I for one can afford the paycut, I am not so sure the guys on the pointy end of the spear can afford to lose the support.”
Please detail how troops in AFGN, Iraq, and other forward areas are directly effected by the supposed life-saving services you provide.
To my knowledge tactical units typically avoid depending upon rear eschelon units for providing local security and support.
I see your point but I just don’t think it’s as dire as you think. People will be fine.
Is this report from the same media you probably hate because of their biased, inaccurate reporting? C’mon, it is a sensationalist hit piece based on skewed, cherry picked data. If i searched, i could find articles from periodicals aimed at federal employees showing the opposite. The truth is somewhere betwwen.
Yes, government jobs are more secure than private sector (for the moment) but many could make more outside govt if they wanted to trade the security. Retirement is similar to many private sector now. I pay more for health insurance with govt than i did with private employer.

I agree with you on the fact that NOW Federal Pensioner Baby Boomers who are the WORST generation ever to step foot in America. They have done more damage then imaginable. X-ers do NOT have the best Federal Pension by a long shot. I can’t wait until the Baby Boomers FINALLY are out of EVERYTHING that is the United States of America. They are a disgrace and have ruined the United States. Once Generation X takes over, we will FINALLY be able to get America back on track. You can cry all day long that I am being unfair but it is true and yep my folks are Baby Boomers and would agree with every word I wrote.
I agree.

I know the folks in my unit provide daily reachback support with technical assistance on maintaining and flying one of the most demanded weapon systems in the world.
Your knowledge is suspect.
