I don’t think Kerry said anything out of character with the traditional US stance on the subject. During the Reagan administration, our official position was that we had no position. Did not stop us from providing all kinds of material, logistical and intelligence help to the Brits. Ultimately, it’s deeds, not words, that matter. Unless Latin America organizes a coalition to invade the Falklands, I don’t think the Argies will be forcing Obama’s hand in terms of deciding whether to help the UK repel an invasion any time soon, such is the decrepit state of Argentina’s armed forces.

Let me be very clear about our position with respect to the Falklands, which I believe is clear. First of all, I’m not going to comment, nor is the President, on a referendum that has yet to take place, hasn’t taken place. Our position on the Falklands has not changed. The United States recognizes de facto U.K. administration of the islands but takes no position on the question of parties’ sovereignty claims thereto.
