The FCO organizes press conferences like weddings, visitors on one side, hosts on the other, and inevitably the first question that came whistling from the British side of the aisle was about the Falklands’ planned March 10 to 11 referendum. Islanders will be asked, “Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an overseas territory of the United Kingdom?” That they will answer with a resounding “Yes!” is not in doubt. That’s the sort of enthusiasm Brits wanted from Kerry too. Instead they got this:
Let me be very clear about our position with respect to the Falklands, which I believe is clear. First of all, I’m not going to comment, nor is the President, on a referendum that has yet to take place, hasn’t taken place. Our position on the Falklands has not changed. The United States recognizes de facto U.K. administration of the islands but takes no position on the question of parties’ sovereignty claims thereto. We support co-operation between U.K. and Argentina on practical matters.

This is typical of the idiocy that comes from this Administration. Nobody in the Falklands wants to be annexed by Argentina. They’re all Brits. Obama is just miffed at the evil European imperialists. He probably doesn’t appreciate that the people running Argentina are the descendants of European imperialists.
kerry’s big concern is to not insult the hispanics
It’s clearly clear.
Further evidence, if any was really needed, that our SoS JFK does not have an eff’n clue.
hey, i thought they were Italian immigrants!
Let me be very clear that I refuse to give a clear answer.
“Let me be very clear about our position with respect to the Falklands, which I believe is clear.”
“I was for the Falklands before I was against them”.
translation: When I'm through speaking you'll just scratch your heads and won't have any real clue about what I've just said as I will bob, weave and obfuscate to hide my real intentions and purposes. I trust that both sides will come away thinking I'm on their side but I'm really on neither. Is that clear?
Good Lord, Lurch (aka Jingis Kan’t) is making Hillary look like George Marshall by comparison.
Kery served in Vietnam...and should go back and live there...on his wifey’s ketchup cash.

I believe that the new card to turn up in this game is “oil”. Seems that oil has been discovered within the territorial waters of the Falklands in the past few years. Consequently, Argentina has renewed its interest in “liberating” the Falklands. One positive thing in favor of the Brits should this turn into a shooting war agaIn is I believe the UK now as two jump jet carriers. And they should be better prepared to fend of exercet missiles and such. If the Brits should be successful in putting boots on the ground and are able to defend them from any Argentina air strikes the outcome will be the same as the last go around. Brits will route them.
I think that’s actually a good statement.
Translated: Don’t expect the USA to come in to defend UK territory when you whittle your military force down to nothing.
The USA doesn’t give a rats ass either way.
Dear GB, be afraid, be very afraid.
You had probably thought that there was no human being in the multiverse less capable of the position than the Hillabeast grifter wife.
You were wrong. Kerry is the baseline from which intelligence is measured. Oh, and he served in Viet Nam (for about a minute or so until a mosquito bit his sorry-*ssed Obamaend).
I don’t think Kerry said anything out of character with the traditional US stance on the subject. During the Reagan administration, our official position was that we had no position. Did not stop us from providing all kinds of material, logistical and intelligence help to the Brits. Ultimately, it’s deeds, not words, that matter. Unless Latin America organizes a coalition to invade the Falklands, I don’t think the Argies will be forcing Obama’s hand in terms of deciding whether to help the UK repel an invasion any time soon, such is the decrepit state of Argentina’s armed forces.
I'm sure the folks in the UK are saying "What does he mean 'De-facto'?" and in Argentina they are saying "Kerry says their claim is 'De-facto' only, now we can go get it".
Proverbs 18:7 "The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips." ISV
Oh, I suspect he does. He has a natural affinity for autocrats and dictators. He also hates the anglosphere colonial oppressors (in his own mind, at least) and he no doubt admires kirchner's ability to seize the private wealth and retirement accounts of Argentinian citizens and destroy her own country.
I think Reagan backed off because of the Monroe Doctrine.
