A teen's luck appears to have changed after a chance encounter with an Indiana restaurant owner during a 10-mile trek through ice and snow for a minimum wage job interview.
It all started on Friday, when Art Bouvier, the proprietor of Papa Roux, a Cajun restaurant in Indianapolis, was laying rock salt outside the establishment after an ice storm earlier that morning.
He said he was approached by a teen who asked him how far it was to 10th and Sherman.
Mr Bouvier told WLFI-TV: 'And I'm thinking we're at 10th and Post. I said, "Buddy that's probably six, seven miles." I said, "You'd be better off on a bus especially in this weather." He just said, "Okay, thank you." And he kept going.'
Later, as Mr Bouvier was driving with his wife to a coffee shop, he was surprised to find the same person, still walking.
They pulled over, and asked him if he needed a ride.
The teen, Jhaqueil Reagan, obliged, and along the way, he told the couple that he was going to a Dairy Queen location for a job interview, and didn't have money for bus fare.
He said that he had already walked three miles before he reached Papa Roux.
Mr Bouvier told Fox 59: 'I'm thinking to myself, here’s a kid walking almost 10 miles in the ice and slush and snow for the hope of a job at minimum wage.

I am a little curious about the name Jhaqueil though.
On a white kid? Just don't fit. Ron would be a better fit.

our DQ here in Somerset Pennsylvania ONLY sells ice cream and they are open seven days a week..
they are slowly pricing their way out of the average budget, at least in this area, where there are NO jobs, just welfare and Social Security, youth leave here after high school..very depressed area...JMO

Odd name. I was wondering possibly French ancestery, but the only place I find the name on facebook apparently belongs to this kid. Full name: “Jhaqueil DamianJoel Reagan.”
Jhaqueil can also be found in Urban Dictionary, with a meaning that can’t be posted here. Maybe it’s an added nickname, if he didn’t like his given name. Odd.
Until minimum wage was invented black teens had much lower unemployment rates than whites. The whole idea of minimum wage was to keep the coloreds from uncutting white folks’ wages. Blacks used to be ambitious and hard working, until the government made good and sure to knock the starch out of them by bribing their women to have kids out of wedlock and keeping them from ever getting entry level jobs. A family of four would need to make $168/day to compete with welfare “benefits”. Underclass black women can’t marry, they can’t take the pay cut. Underclass black men can’t find work, because the government won’t let them.
Oh, that the current Administration possessed such values and would use its daily media exposure to inspire such a sense of self-reliance and responsibility among youth.
This, truly, represents the spirit of liberty among those who first came to these shores!
If so-called "progressive" policies don't destroy this young man's opportunities, then perhaps his story may, one day, match that contained in the following story from the 18th Century:
At the web site of PRONI, The Public Records of Northern Ireland - here - can be found inspiring words about Irish emigrants to the U. S.Of special note are the words of John Dunlap, an emigrant, who was responsible for the printing of the new nation's Declaraiton of Independence.
On 12 May 1785, he wrote from Philadelphia to his brother-in-law, Robert Rutherford, Strabane, Co. Tyrone, extolling the advantages of the New World and referred to his brother, James Dunlap, who was likewise in America:
"... my brother James left this for Kentucky a few weeks ago; I expect him back in the summer; then perhaps he may take a trip to Ireland. The account he gives of the soil is pleasing but the difficulty of going to it from this is great; indeed the distance is not less than a thousand miles. I was there last year and must confess that although the journey is a difficult one I did not begrudge the time and labour it cost me. We are told the parliament of Ireland means to lay restrictions on those who want to come from that country to this; time will tell whether or no this will answer the purpose they intend. "John Dunlap's is not an untypical life story of many who 'went west' from Co. Tyrone in the 18th century to make a new life and create a new country to which they then encouraged and assisted others to migrate. One went and succeeded and therefore others followed. By the time he died, on 27 November 1812, aged 66, John Dunlap had amassed a large fortune and had subscribed £4,000 in 1780 to the National Bank formed to supply the American Army, and he held 98,000 acres in Virginia and the adjoining counties of Kentucky. He also owned the land on which Utica, Ohio, stands.

Possibly all money they had was used for food, etc. There ARE people who have zero money and are out on the street with nothing but a few possessions in a backpack, who do need a job. I have known of military vets in this situation.
As for hitchhiking, I would hope he wouldn’t do that. He could wind up raped and dead. Yes, an 18 yr old boy could easily become the victim of a homosexual psychopath.
Few people will pick up a black teen hitchhiker, and the cops would probably hassel him anyway. When I was in HS I used to walk five miles (I had time on my hands) rather than pay 50c for a bus. Bus fare is gotta be a couple of bucks these days.
