ST. LOUIS (WFIE) -
Some women in St. Louis are ready to take aim and fire if confronted by an attacker, but their weapon of choice isn't a gun.
Instead, they're turning to a common household product to protect themselves.
It's barely seven bucks, but it makes Joy Gridnick Christensen feel a whole lot safer.
"And we keep it right here so if you came to the counter with the cash register I would just get this on you and zap you right in the face," said Christensen.
As owner of the Fountain on Locust, she's armed all her employees with wasp spray in case of an attacker and she's not the only St. Louisan using this self defense tactic.
South County resident Carol Dickinson hasn't left home without it since buying a can about a month ago.
"I keep a can of wasp spray in my car in the console where the cup holder is," said Dickinson.
Her friend sent her an email suggesting she try it.
"I can't shoot a gun but I can shoot wasp spray," said Dickinson. "
"Having a gun makes you have to have all sorts of other responsibilities," says Christensen.
And these women say it's how the spray shoots that appeals to them.

really? if I use wasp spray on a black dude won’t that be a hate crime no matter what i am?
Nahh, black on black crime doesn’t even get reported.
When a lady in on her bike and a handgun does not seem the thing to carry, get what I got Mrs Burke. Kimber makes it. It will still be going 90mph at 13 feet distance and is three times as effective as pepper spray -- it sticks and will disable for 45 minutes.
And if they were ever really in a “fight,” once it got to the ground it is game over, against any male. Teaching females to try and fight males is cruel and repulsive.
Don’t bring bug spray to a gunfight.
Plus be sure and stock up with bug spray now before the Democrats start trying to ban it.

Wasp Spray as a Defensive Tool = Bad Idea
> hair spray would do the job too.
> Only if you hold a flame in front of it ;)
I’ll bet “Easy-Off” oven spray would work wonders.
What is that thing, please?
Yeah, the gun debate is really about individual citizen empowerment, not guns per se. So if wasp spray is affective and gives an individual empowerment and protection, it will get controlled or banned. It’s the “power” thing.
Yeah -- or Catholic?
unless they can get their hands on a weapon that could do some real damage and succeed in causing such damage, in general, yes.
of course if they can get a kick in the groin in quickly and get the hell out of there, that’s the way to go. That’s actually one of my first plans on how to end any fight I’d ever find myself in. Just get em’ in pain and get away. I’m not going to hurt/wear myself out if I don’t have to.
I thought Catholics only committed crimes at church?
Tell it to the DoD, before they do something crazy like approve putting women in combat. Oh, wait...
That seems fair. Black on white crime doesn't get reported, either.
OTOH, if pulled over in some criminal friendly territory like New England, just practice telling the officer that you are a neat freak and it is there to clean the glass in your car.
Although, personally, if I couldn't pack a handgun, this would be my choice. Not cheap, but does reach up to 30 feet. Put some mountaineering stickers on the back of your car and tell the officer it was the only thing you had handy to defend yourself when assaulted. The distributor will not ship to certain blue states, but no law against possession because it isn't specifically designed to defend against human savages.
One major problem with “bug spray” or any spray for that matter is the likelihood of spraying yourself in the process. The second is that if your not prepared to kill someone in self defense you really better prepare to just be killed, raped and brutalized as a choice.
HA!
