MOSCOW -- The Russian Academy of Sciences is estimating the meteor that streaked into the skies over the Ural Mountains and caused shock waves that injured more than 400 people weighed about 10 tons (11 tons avoirdupois).

The academy said in a statement hours after the Friday morning fall that the meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above ground.

The fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. The Emergency Ministry says more than 500 people sought treatment after the blasts and that 34 of them were hospitalized.

Were these companions of the asteroid that was supposed to miss us by about 20K miles sometime Friday?

That was my first thought. The second thought was, how many others might there be if that's the case? The third thought is, do I want to spend the day in the studio or outside with a camera?

For some reason I can’t stream all of the videos, but the one item I was referring to was the video clip where the ground shook and the windows rattled several long moments after the streak passed overhead. I believe any explosion or impact took place miles away from where that video was filmed.

Looking at all the craters on the moon is scary. We are a bigger target.

Not sure what we can do if a really big one is on a collision course. Our space program is almost non-existent.

damn global warming...

Correct.

It's just science. Since we evil humans are trapping our heat underneath all of that excess CO2 that we are creating the side effect is that, from outer space, the earth looks "cool".

It is well known that "cool" attracts teenage girls. It less well known that it also attracts meteorites.

When will we learn that you can't mess around with Mother Nature?

Commentator says most injuries were from shattering glass. People ran to the window to look at the meteor, then the windows shattered.

Reminds me of the beginning of the “Day of the Triffids” movie.

Might not be a bad idea to check my "prep" supplies.

And take a shower :)

Hmmm...yeah, just finally saw some videos with sound. The meteor trail cloud looks like it might have blown up over that location, though. IT was so high up there is going to be a long time delay.

Could be the sonic boom - sounds like one, I was buzzed by an F-15 at low altitude fishing once.

The detonation when the flash occurs was pretty massive, though.

How to prevent impacts is something worth study.

If there was only one legitimate function of government, it would be to prevent the end of humanity in an asterorid impact.

I hope this incident at least gets real money behind asteroid detection and mitigation planning efforts like Rusty Schweikart's B612 group, and stop people from laughing at it.
