MOSCOW -- The Russian Academy of Sciences is estimating the meteor that streaked into the skies over the Ural Mountains and caused shock waves that injured more than 400 people weighed about 10 tons (11 tons avoirdupois).
The academy said in a statement hours after the Friday morning fall that the meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above ground.
The fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. The Emergency Ministry says more than 500 people sought treatment after the blasts and that 34 of them were hospitalized.

damn global warming...
Another "brilliant" scientist bites the dust....
Bill Nye will have some cockamamie theory about how SUVs are acting like magnets pulling these asteroids towards earth.
The odds are small but the possibility is always there. Funny thing is that yesterday, H2 ran shows about the possibility of meteor and comet impacts all day.
How to prevent impacts is something worth study.
No Way! Wow!!
Interesting that the meteorite landed in Chelyabinsk, a region even more polluted than Chernobyl.
BTW, In the Ukrainian Language of the NIV Bible, The star in Revelation that falls from heaven, called “Wormwood”, is translated to “Chernobyl”. Here is the verse:
“The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many died from the water, because it was made bitter.” (Revelation 8:1011,
Just sayin’.
“Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the nationalist leader noted for vehement statements, said “It’s not meteors falling, it’s the test of a new weapon by the Americans,” the RIA Novosti news agency reported.”
The all powerful George Bush is at it again.
Its been fairly big news on the BBC this morning.
Amazing. Glad to hear that no one was killed.
BOZHE MOI!
(My God!)
And only 11 to 16 (sources vary) were to be sent to hispital. Those hundreds mostly had small wounds because of broken windowglasses.
Check out the video on comment #4.
Omens. We haz them.
The odds of dying from an asteroid strike are the same as dying from a. Plane crash. A small but significant threat...
I take it as a sign that NASA should stop studying the earth and get back into the exploration, pathfinding, and prospecting business.
Wow
Stunning Pics & Video: Reports of Many Injuries From Meteorite Strike in Russias Ural Mountains
Were these companions of the asteroid that was supposed to miss us by about 20K miles sometime Friday?
Not sure of the date, because it supposed to pass during our daytime, I think.
I’ll have to go do more research.
