MOSCOW -- The Russian Academy of Sciences is estimating the meteor that streaked into the skies over the Ural Mountains and caused shock waves that injured more than 400 people weighed about 10 tons (11 tons avoirdupois).
The academy said in a statement hours after the Friday morning fall that the meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above ground.
The fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. The Emergency Ministry says more than 500 people sought treatment after the blasts and that 34 of them were hospitalized.

All this talk of wormwood has me wanting to take a shot of absinthe when I get home tonight.
Yum...
Sort of think this baby one might have been a nice warning. What if that had exploded over NYC, Miami, or LA?
...not to worry...Bloomberg has issued a decree banning all meterorites larger than a pebble...
The gal on Fox News was off target on her remarks, she kept saying that NASA can deflect these. They can’t do jack about an asteroid hitting the Earth, they also have no way to track an asteroid/meteor below a certain size.
13:20 GMT: The number of people injured in the meteorite blast has risen to 950, Governor of Chelyabinsk Region Mikhail Yurevitch said.
...
13:02 GMT: Nearly 3,000 buildings in Chelyabinsk were damaged to varying extents by the meteor shower, including 34 medical facilities and 361 schools and kindergartens, the city administrations website reported. The total amount of window glass shattered amounts to 100,000 square meters, the site said, citing city administration head Sergey Davydov.
An official from the Interior Ministry told Interfax that three large pieces of meteorite debris had been retrieved in the area and that 10,000 police officers are searching for more.
My news said over 700 sought medical treatment
Just WOW!
Imagine what would have happened if it would have been larger or hit somewhere more densely populated.
If man doesn't destroy himself A meteor or Asteroid could certainly do it.
If I were someone like Gore and I had even an ounce of humbleness left, I would be.
Just read this morning that there is TALK of a plan by NASA to look into nudging asteroids out of collision paths. Nothing is available now.
10,000 police officers?
I haven’t watched a “remake” in at least a decade. They’re all pretty horrendous.
“Before the Comet comes, many nations, the good excepted, will be scoured with want and famine. The great nation in the ocean that is inhabited by people of different tribes and descent by an earthquake, storm and tidal waves will be devastated. It will be divided, and in great part submerged. That nation will also have many misfortunes at sea, and lose its colonies in the east through a Tiger and a Lion.
The Comet by its tremendous pressure, will force much out of the ocean and flood many countries, causing much want and many plagues. [After the] great Comet, the great nation will be devastated by earthquakes, storms, and great waves of water, causing much want and plagues. The ocean will also flood many other countries, so that all coastal cities will live in fear, with many destroyed. All sea coast cities will be fearful and many of them will be destroyed by tidal waves, and most living creatures will be killed and even those who escape will die from a horrible disease.
So says Saint Hildegard....
interesting turn of phrase....The Comet by its tremendous pressure...she doesn’t say “force or impact.”
Heck, ex=Pres Clinton hired 100,000 cops (or was it a million - eh, what’s the difference).
Here is the states, it would probably be more like 10,000 looters looking for free TVs and booze that apparently fell out of the sky.
Notice the angle of approach - flat, not at all direct.
Now, consider the presentation here: http://www.threeimpacts-twoevents.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/SIMULTANEOUS-IMPACTS-3JAN2013-WEBSITE.pdf
I think the bugs wiped out Buonos Aires with a larger version. Maybe this was just a test.
Too bad there wasn’t one ten times that big to hit Mecca
The area around Chelyabinsk is also home to dozens of defense factories, including nuclear factories and those involved in production of thermonuclear weapons, said Vladimir Lipunov, an astrophysicist at the Shternberg State Astronomy Institute.

The Russian army has joined the rescue operation. Radiation, chemical and biological protection units have been put on high alert. Since the explosion occurred several kilometers above the Earth, a large ground area must be thoroughly checked for radiation and other threats.

Police in the Chelyabinsk region are reportedly on high alert, and have begun Operation Fortress in order to protect vital infrastructure.

You can hear the loud sonic boom and shattering glass. Wow! Thats scary!

Last night on Coast to Coast they were reporting that it knocked out cell towers etc. in the region.
This thing was traveling so fast it was breaking the sound barrier. As I understand it that is some of the explosion sound you hear in the videos.
PS...
All space debris is potentially radioactive. Science knows that much from their travels and testing.
So yes, an explosion like this and the dust/debris may be highly contaminated.
The same was true when the space shuttle blew up over Texas. It is why they told people to stay away from the debris.
