LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has just announced hes reopening the case that resulted in accused cop killer and former officer Christopher Dorners termination.
Im not doing this to appease him. Im doing this so the community has faith in what the police department does, Beck said in an exclusive interview Saturday with CBS2s Pat Harvey.
In a 20-page manifesto posted on Facebook, Dorner allegedly vows revenge against several former LAPD co-workers whom he claims ended his career.
This investigation has already been reviewed at multiple levels If I have to redo something or deal with an issue I will deal with it publicly, said Beck, adding that interviews about the case cannot legally be made public for the interviewers safety.
The police chief said Dorner has not reached out to him in any way.
He stressed that if Dorner were to contact the police department and surrender he would guarantee his safety.
CBS News reported Saturday that investigators found weapons and cold weather survival gear inside the burned-out truck belonging to Dorner after it was located in Big Bear. Several law enforcement agencies have been scouring the area for the triple murder suspect.
Im not going to comment on what was recovered. Im not going to comment on where we think he is or what we think hes doing, said Beck, who added that would be revealed in time.
Harvey mentioned that thousands of people are publicly supporting the triple murder suspect on a Facebook page.
Im surprised about it. Ive been doing this for 36 years and not a lot surprises me, Beck said.
The manifesto includes dozens of targets and warned that their families will be harmed.
I will utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordinance and survival training Ive been given, Dorner writes. You have misjudged a sleeping giant.
The manifesto goes on to say, I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, Im terminating yours.
Beck said the situation is putting tremendous stress on those officers and their families.
We have protection details for 50 families. Imagine having to go through your daily existence like that, knowing your family was the target of a trained assassin like Dorner It is absolutely unthinkable, the police chief said.
Beck said he is putting all the departments resources into finding Dorner.
This is not just about cops, this is about all of us. There is a small, small portion of the population that puts themselves at risk for the benefit of society, and when theyre attacked, it puts the rest of the population under attack.
I will do everything it takes to capture Dorner and to keep our police officers and the city safe, everything it takes.
At the end of the interview, Harvey asked Beck why he chose to grant her the interview exclusively. The police chief explained that he had a good relationship with the CBS2 anchor and thought she was a fair journalist. He said he also wanted to reach out to the African-American community, who Dorner claims is unfairly targeted by LAPD officers.
It may also have to do with Dorner praising Harvey in his manifesto: Pat Harvey, Ive always thought you carried yourself professionally and personally the way a strong black woman should. Your articulation and speech is second to none. You are the epitome of a journalist/anchor. You are America.
Can someone explain the possible reasoning behind torching the truck? He had abandoned the truck way out on a forest road in the snow...wouldn’t it have been several days before someone found it if he had not set it on fire? Torching it just brought them straight to it. What would the reason be for doing that?
“Torching it just brought them straight to it. What would the reason be for doing that?”
Simple, so they search for him on the Mountian instead of where he is.
I don't know. Either the dude is some kind of mastermind, or he's just been damn lucky so far.
Or
2. He was using it as bait to draw resources and attention to that area and away from other areas and routes.
Since "Jack Boots" are so evil, who would you assign to try to track this guy down?
How about the fact that you are head of an incompetent, wasteful, and dangerous organization? Does that surprise you?
The shooting at the newspaper delivery truck ladies and morning commuter sort of shows this line to be a lie.
3. He's sitting inside his warm and cozy and well-stocked prepper bunker in the mountains watching TV and laughing at the cops tromping around in the cold, wet snow.
I'll go with choice No. 2. Just because Chris Dorner is a paranoid psychotic does not mean he's stupid. He's planned this for over four years and has thought out many scenarios. He's got safe houses and caches all over the area. Plus, he's got the tacit approval of a lot of Los Angelinos who look at the LAPD as thugs with badges. Dorner has the ability to lie dormant until the cops are forced by budget costs to cut back their resources hunting him. Then he can go back to hunting them.
...by shooting dozens of times into the back of a pickup with two women out delivering newspapers and opening fire on at least one other innocent person.
LAPD puts the "Police" into "Police State."
Bingo-—I’d say he’s trying to distract from that scandal.
I guess having a set of balls in California must be against the rules for jobs in the public sector. I can assure you that if they fired an affirmative action employee, there is plenty in that file.
Not a good thing to do.
To bring resources and attention to the wrong place. On another topic, maybe he was wronged. I don’t care. He needs to be stopped, and hopefully killed before he hurts anyone else.
“There is a small, small portion of the population that puts themselves at risk for the benefit of society,”
If this girly man believed that he’d charge the clowns who have shot up a good bit of LA.
He’s obviously getting the racism pass. Sickening.
Something I haven't seen mentioned here is that fire is the best way to destroy most forensic evidence, other than the type of fuel to start it, which fire investigators routinely determine. Sounds like a smart move by a determined whackjob. Plus, as others have said, it may have been a diversion for his get away.
