Just days before he leaves office, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is recommending military pay be limited, effectively decreasing troop salaries next year.
Panetta will recommend to Congress that military salaries be limited to a 1% increase in 2014. The Pentagon has calculated that the Labor Department's 2014 Employment Cost Index is expected to be above 1% but wants to still cut back on pay because of "budget uncertainties," a department official told CNN. In 2013, a 1.7% increase was approved, based on the index, which has been the basis for military pay for the last several years.
Three Pentagon officials have confirmed details of the plan to CNN. The Joint Chiefs of Staff have also agreed to Panetta's proposed pay plan. Final approval for the pay would come from Congress in the form of the 2014 budget.
The recommendation is tied to the Defense Department's 2014 budget recommendation, which was expected to be sent to Congress this month, one of the officials said. But the officials acknowledge it is going to be seen as an effort to push Congress to stop the automatic budget cuts that could go into effect if no deal is reached on spending reductions.

Now, this is just infuriating!! If there is ANYONE who SHOULDN’T get pay cuts, it’s our military! These guys are not very well paid to begin with, and they’re putting their own futures and families on hold while they put their lives on the line for us!
Feds pay has been frozen for 3 years. No COLAs either. Cost of all their benefits went up; hence a cut in pay.

Federal employees are still paid WELL ABOVE what non federal employees earn for doing similar duties.
And federal employees in favored locations such as the DC metropolitan area, San Francisco and New York are paid WELL ABOVE other federal employees in the REST OF THE UNITED STATES.
Of course, the federal government has FEDERAL EMPLOYEES who conduct studies that always conclude that federal employees are underpaid compared to non governmental employees. It’s all BS—the pay and benefits of federal CIVILIAN employees is the place to start any “cuts”. As a minimum, keep the pay freeze going and phase out “locality pay” that benefits in areas such as the DC metro area. Those would be just for starters.

Now every member of our Armed Forces, and their families, will know what to do in 2014: vote Republican.
Veteran suicides are up to 22 per day. That is huge.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
women get to serve for less money... a literal war on women...
Buwahahahahahaha
Who will join our military if they don’t get paid?
Shouldn’t we cut postal workers pay before soldiers?
Oh that’s right their union wouldn’t allow that.
#ing tyrannical pigs.
Why are you so resentful? Were you forced to follow your career path?
I agree that defense spending shouldn’t be cut. I joined the navy partly because of the money. Everyone, who risks their lives, for their country, should be paid at least as much as they’re paid, now.
We could probably find some fat that could be trimmed in the Defense budget but it should not be service members salaries or anything that would reduce their safety.
Let our service people come back as illegal aliens and get all the freebies they get—problem solved.
