WASHINGTON (AP) - Most candy, high-calorie drinks and greasy meals could soon be on a food blacklist in the nation's schools.
For the first time, the government is proposing broad new standards to make sure all foods sold in schools are more healthful.
Under the new rules the Agriculture Department proposed Friday, foods like fatty chips, snack cakes, nachos and mozzarella sticks would be taken out of lunch lines and vending machines. In their place would be foods like baked chips, trail mix, diet sodas, lower-calorie sports drinks and low-fat hamburgers.

Yes, many have. I’ve even managed to turn my best friend away from the Dem. party. It took 23 years, but I managed it! She no longer votes for big government types.
Still working on many others. Most of them won’t turn because they are pro-abortion, but they admit that I was right about government intrusion all along.
The smoking bans aren’t about health.
The TSA isn’t about safety.
The Food Police are not concerned with health.
Red Light Cameras are not about safety.
NONE of these and NONE of the thousands of other “helpful” laws passed for our own good are really about health, or safety, or whatever. They are ALL about control, and they always have been.
Regards,
I wish that more people would wake up. But the control efforts are so incremental that many don’t see it because it sounds “reasonable”.
Badminton was fun back in the day...brings back fond memories...;-)
We loved it. Our little park had tennis courts but the “big kids” always had those. And we could play it in the street.
Well, you would have to be a skilled smuggler to be in the business. That's why it's black market.
I also note that pot is contraband in school, but that's never seemed to eliminate it from schools; it just made the price higher.
Government is as stupid about nutrition as they are about everything else they stick their hands into and screw up-they are supposed to defend our shores, maintain our borders, etc and they can’t even seem to do that anymore...
Why do kids in towns not play outdoors anymore-parents can’t turn off a TV or computer and say “no-go get some fresh air”?
My mom kept the TV off limits on nice days except after dark and on Saturday morning-I did the same with my cub. I live in a rural area, and what few young kids there are here are all over the woods and road until dark-parents still go out to the gate and yell for them to come home, too.
And speaking of the chemical laden “healthy” food, have you read the calorie and carb numbers on that trail mix crap? It is a dried fruit sugar bomb with carbs in the form of whole grains-give the kid oatmeal for breakfast at home, and fresh fruit. No one needs to eat that processed stuff on a regular basis, especially not kids...
We know this isn't about nutrition but control. How much will parents put up with?
Not multi-tasking well today. lol
Here is an example of the nutritional content of trail mix-this is from a multiple serving bag of Planters fruit and nut trail mix-and sugar is ingredient #3, by the way...

Yum, yum-I wouldn’t eat that for a snack, never mind give it to a kid...
I’m ranch raised myself-returned to the country as soon as I could, and will never leave again. A number of parents live here and commute to work because they want their kids in a small country school district, but most of kids in this community are either homeschooled, or go to the nearby
Christian school.
I have found that what is considered "healthy" really isn't. It either tastes like cardboard or is loaded with garbage.
I think a lot of our foods have become unhealthy. I also think there's a reason for it.
I raised my kids in a rural township but even that was becoming politically correct.
Homeschooling is the best alternative.
My cub went to private school until 10th grade, but if I had little ones now, I would homeschool.
Diet sodas have more unnatural stuff in them than a lab that produces insecticides, too-take a look at the label- that stuff can’t be good for human consumption. I grew up in a family totally into all things fresh, drug free and natural and passed it on. Being overweight, or other health problems has never been an issue, either unless someone changed eating habits, or let themselves get talked into prescription or other drugs after they left home.
Aspartame should have never been used in beverages. I get headaches from it. Can’t chew gum with it in either. They are putting a lot of crap in our foods.
I keep artificial sweetner packs here for any guest who wants to use it, but it is that Stevia stuff. I just don’t like sweet stuff, but for fresh fruit-we weren’t allowed much candy as kids, but there was a small orchard.
I started baking my own bread when my child was a baby-with all natural wholewheat flour, and it makes an excellent trade for a few eggs from a neighbor who has some free range chickens, or for some honey from another neighbor who has some beehives. Barter of goods and services is becoming more common here, and I see that as something positive.
I have the room for chickens but finances keeps me from fixing an outbuilding for them. *sigh*
I’m selling this house so I can have another property here with enough dirt to expand the garden-that way I can barter or sell my veggies and herbs-I also intend to build an off the grid cabin.
I pray that your plans come to fruition!
That is almost as big as the small family ranch I grew up on-do you keep livestock? I only need an acre or two, and that will do fine. I wish MrT5 were here to share this dream, but that was not to be.
I'm so sorry that you lost your lifes partner. That's a hard thing.
