TRENTON It looks like Geraldo Rivera is already prepping his platform.
One day after announcing on his radio show that he is "truly considering" running in 2014 for the U.S. Senate seat now held by New Jersey's Frank Lautenberg, Rivera amped up his message today in a television interview and a column on the Fox News Latino website.
The longtime media personality portrayed himself as a moderate Republican who is fiscally conservative but also supports gay marriage and Roe v. Wade.
"Democrats have a huge registration advantage in New Jersey," Rivera said during a short interview on the Fox News morning show "Fox and Friends." "But I really do believe, as a moderate Republican, there is a point of view that is unrepresented in states like New Jersey. There can be a new vitalization of the Republican party."
Rivera a longtime Fox News TV anchor is the first Republican to publicly express interest in the seat. Although the 89-year-old Lautenberg has not given any indication he won't seek re-election, Newark Mayor Cory Booker recently said he was interested running, and a number of other Democrats are also waiting in the wings. Rivera, 69, a resident of Edgewater in Bergen County and former owner of the Two River Times newspaper in Red Bank, said in today's interview he envisions a Republican Party "we extol the virtues of good business and fiscal policy and fight the deficit and don't advocate the printing of money in obscene amounts just to cover our debts."

I dont know if you remember but either 2007 or 2008 Michele Malin guest hosted The factor every Friday night during the summer.
By then I couldn't stand O Reilly but Malkin was really good and fun to watch outraged at the government and illegals...I looked forward to it each Friday.
Then of a sudden she is off the show no longer hosting.
She said she quit doing it because Rivera called her a racist on air over her illegal immigration comments and O Reilly refused to stick up for her. Ingraham is definitely better than BOR but Malkin was better.
If I ever thought of watching him after that there was no chance.
There is the first lie of his political career. He's off to a running start.
“The longtime media personality portrayed himself as a moderate Republican who is fiscally conservative but also supports gay marriage and Roe v. Wade.”
Not that I would EVER support this type of person, but can ANYONE name one of them, in the Senate for example?
In other words, the people that can’t get social issues right, rarely, if ever, get fiscal issues right.
Jerry Rivers is as racist as they come, with the possible exception of Ruben Navarrette.
They helped Harry Reid get back in office because they wouldn’t help finance Sharon Angle’s campaign. She wasn’t the best candidate, but she sure as heck was miles ahead of Dingy! Turned me off on the Republican Party forever!
Geraldo is a clown. I doubt even people in New Jersey will take him seriously.
If Whorealdo is as bad a senator as he is a journalist then he ought be working the fry line at burger king.
“Geraldo Rivera declares himself a ‘moderate Republican’ as he eyes U.S. Senate run” Hey considering what the GOP has become he might actually be right sad to say.
...a moderate Republican who is fiscally conservative but also supports gay marriage and Roe v. Wade...and who started the practice of using news broadcasts to push a political agenda, such that the station had to have someone standing by to punch in the "OPINION" caption at the bottom of the screen when he'd end his Vietnam coverage with jewels like "I hate this damned war".
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said. [Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance]

O’Reilly only cares about ratings, so he pretends to be a liberal on some issues, an conservative on others. A transparent ratings whore. Out for himslf 100%. I dropped him many years ago.
Apparently Geraldo Rivera (aka Gerald Rivers), like so many in today's politics, is ignorant of relatively recent history. There have been quite a number of "moderate" RINOish Republicans who have ran for and even won public office in New Jersey. We could start with the current Gov. Christie, who many already forget, beat a solidly conservative GOP opponent in the primary four years ago, and recently seems to being cozying up to Zero. Before him there were Christie Todd Whitman and Tom Kean. And if you'd like to go back a little further, there was Sen. Clifford Case. In the House there were Millicent Fenwick and Peter Freulinghuysen and Dick Zimmer, just a few names that come to mind. So Rivera would hardly be a novelty as a "moderate" Republican in NJ, just a novelty as media personality entering elective politics as a "moderate" Republican.
Who knew?
I was aware that Rivera was calling himself a Republican occasionally on the air, although his views in general would have to be considered more in line with those of the 'Rats.
I've never liked Rivera with his history of changing his name to benefit from his half Puerto Rican ancestry.
I wouldn't necessarily assume that Menendez is stepping down. Remember that he's not only a Democrat but a "minority" Democrat, so he has two layers of immunization and insulation from the media and the Obama Justice Department as relates to this Dominican prostitution affair.
Oh Good grief.
Geraldo???????? Yikes.
It’s getting so I am sick of hearing “I’m a fiscal conservative but . . .” These people think fiscal conservatism gives them good cover to be all Brave New World on the social issues. It’s almost enough to give fiscal conservatives a bad name.
Just what we need, another liberal Republican. sigh
I’m actually pretty surprised he’s come over enough to have actually left the rat party to become a RINO. I thought he was just a Fox News democrat.
Racist.
Racist. Yes, a racist.
Illegal alien criminal invading insurgent colonists supporter and lover.
Hater.
Traitor, gave away the position of our troops while in Iraq.
And I will add that the fiasco on FOX where he literally (not physically) attacked Michelle Malkin and that slimy worm had this to say:
Geraldo Rivera said that that crazy attention whore Malkin was “the most vile, hateful commentator I've ever met Its good shes in D.C. and Im in N.Y. Id spit on her if I saw her.”
He is one of the most despicable lowlifes on this planet. Brave guy, would spit on a WOMAN!
And O'Reilly hosted a show with Rivera where he did NOT apologize, and O'Reilly smiled and said it's all OK now.
Part of his apology was "I never spit!"
Punk.
Ugh, ugh. Ugh again. Argh, too.
I hope conservatives turn out to protest and make it clear he won’t get their votes
