Former First Dog Barney Bush a black Scottish terrier known for chasing golf balls and taking America on video tours of the White House has passed away after a battle with lymphoma. He was 12.
Former President George W. Bush announced on Friday the passing of the little fellow, saying in a news release that after twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness.
Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House, said Bush, who also released Friday an oil painting he did of Barney. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.

Rest well Barn...faithful friend and pal.
What more could you ask for?
First Doggie ping!
Great, so now we get to miss the dog, as well.
And now his watch has ended.
Awww, how sad. I really liked Barney and especially his Christmas tours.
Great dog, may he rest in doggie heaven. I remember once when he mingled amongst the reporters and W said, “Careful, Bareney, nothing’s off the record!”. Another time a reporter bent down to pet him and Barney bit him.
In 2004 the Republicns in our County passed out baggies with Milk Bones in them and a picture of Barney to all of the spectators who brought their dogs to the 4th of July float. My Golden Retriever walked along wearing a “campaign coat” that said Bush Cheney on it. My Golden (who is the same age as Barney) is in failing health too. This makes me sad.
Always loved his Christmas videos. RIP buddy.
God Bless you Barney..thank you for 12 years of outstanding service..rest in peace little guy
I remember when he took a dump in front of the cameras while Bush was having a press conference at the ranch. He showed the press what he thought of them.
Looking at the pics at a link, Barney was truly a companion and loved. He was not a prop like BO’s dog and the Clinton’s Buddy whom you never see/saw. I wonder how Miss Beazley is taking it. I have 2 Dandie Dinmont Terriers getting up there in age and can’t stand the thought of one being left alone.
Is Obama going to have a barbeque in his honor?
Dandie Dinmonts! I didn’t know anybody actually owned those. They are so cute in the dog shows! Lucky you.
Yes, that’s the tough part about accepting the unconditional
love they offer, but if it repays them just a little I’m
ok with it.
Miss Trooper my Plott hound, and Digger my Blue Heeler
best dogs I ever had.
Have three now, Shorty my Jack Russel and two of my
mom’s since she is in assisted living.
When Digger first started with diabetes she brought
Shorty home with her and he just stayed on.
He’s a funny dog, smiles a lot but is a deep thinker
too. We sometimes discuss string theory, and the
expanding universe and why females smell so good.
I’ll tell you what happened when my Schnauzer passed....They had a rubber tug toy that they used to play with together. It was sort of the outline of a bow tie.
The larger, younger dog would approach the sleeping Schnauzer and whack him with the end of the toy until he woke up and grabbed the other end, and then they’d chase around trying to pull it away from each other.
When Wolfie, the Schnauzer, did not come home from the vet and the Golden puppy saw my husband holding his empty collar, she let out the most pitiful wail. She was about 6 months old at the time. And she refused to ever pick up her favorite rubber tug toy again the rest of her life. (15 1/2 years)
Barney was so dang cute!!
Barney had lots of personality. Cute little guy, too.
