My husband I just ended our debate about having children. To breed or not to breed, this was the question and it had been ticking like an egg timer in the back of my head for 15 years.
We talked about it for five months. In the car on the way to work. During dinner. For five minutes, for 30 minutes. After seeing nephews and nieces.
I wanted it to be a decision we made, not one made for us by chance or time. I turned to friends with kids for advice. Feel free to convince me to your side, I told them. Leaving a legacy and crazy joy, they said. I bow down to their personal sacrifice. It is an enormous gift for society to raise an educated, productive, ethical, moral child.
On our last vacation, my husband and I mulled over this question: On your deathbed, what will you regret not doing? We listed our answers at dinner on the last night. Neither of us mentioned children...

No individual must be fruitful. You can be a monk or dedicate yourself to expanding the frontiers of knowledge, or something. Too many giants of higher culture, in the fields of art, science, philosophy, politics, religion, etc. were childless to mention. We could also mention the families of geniuses, like the Bachs or Bernoullis, and be thankful they multiplied, but nevermind.
No particular member of civilization matters, unless he just so happens to be Jesus or someone similarly indispensable, which obviously is unlikely. What matters is what regular people do, and such barrenness in general would kill American civilization.
And still a number of lefties increasing! It is a paradox of Darwinism:)
Bourbon bootprint?
dude, they didn’t do it in secret.
They did it by dumbing down the country and convincing enough people that it was stupid and prudish to oppose them.
Good. Let’s hope all liberals take this path. Lets encourage them all to get out of the gene pool.
God bless you! I have twin grandchildren. The lights of my life. (see my profile for a picture)
LOl good point. Or at the very least, move out of the West and go live a spartan lifestyle in some third world country. There they can practice what they preach and also “diversify” at the same time.
I bet if you look at this bag’s true lifestyle and motivations, it is extremely materialistic and self centered. It has nothing to do with environmental issues, only their own little bank account “environment” Selfish? You bet. But at least I’m glad it’s her not having kids, just wish more left wingers would do the same.
I’d just like to point out that movie may be dead-on prescient, but it is a cultural and not an evolutionary phenomenon. There can be massive swings in intelligence from person to person; there are savants and there are retards. If you happen to compare a member of the Bach family with Billy Bob Quarterback, there, it would be unfortunate if the former stayed barren while the latter went forth and multiplied.
However, there isn’t much variance in human jntellegence across the entire gene pool. Most of us fall within a certain range, and the extremes of the bell curve never cause sudden shifts to genius or stupidity. It is highly unlikely general intelligence will decline for biological reasons. Much more likely are political, sociological, and cultural causes.
Humans have been genetically pretty much the same for 65,000 years or so. What’s changed since the agricultural and other revolutions is what we learn after we’re alive.
That thar is pretty funny and on that note, I'm going to bed.
Well, meow.
Nice! Congratulations.
No, I was asleep- post-Reagan, when things were going good and making money and they got their tentacles in and migrated the dems into a party of perversion/diversity.
I slept for 15-20 years, raising kids and living the old American Dream.
Children are a blessing, even if you occasionally want to strangle them. Daughters are a special blessing, for their caring abilities. My brother lamented to me after I was injured that he only had sons. ;)

Please don't make our side look stupid.
Shame on all of us here for not supporting this woman and this wonderful thought!
Now, if we can just convince all the whack-job-libs of this, we would be on the right track.
do I really need a sarchasim tag?
My best line ever was "One of you is a spare. Don't make me stop this car and make a decision!".

It’s amazing how people need to run their mouths in order to justify themselves to other people, or in this case publish an article to tell the whole world. Such activity does not bespeak a clear conscience. Also, if I had had a mother who told me, her child, how “much higher” could have gotten if she hadn’t had to take time out and have me, I too would be more than a little confused about children and the gift of God that is life. All in all a pretty sad commentary on modern, progressive worldview.
So, on your next vacation and get a little acquainted with strangers or the next time you are sipping a fine wine with other similarly minded friends, be sure to tell them too. You will need to, again and again and again and again, just as your mother felt she had to tell you what she did. A wise and selfless mother would never have said such a thing. Oh, and about her telling you “you wouldn’t like it,” think about what she said by that.
It took them 15 years to decide? I would say their biological clocks are up.
“To breed or not to breed, this was the question”
If THAT was the question, that conversation was over before it started.
