WASHINGTON -- A judge has been holding secret hearings in the case of the man convicted in the 2001 killing of Chandra Levy, the latest twist in a high-profile murder that went unsolved for years and captivated the public because of the intern's romantic relationship with a California congressman.
The meetings, held sporadically behind closed doors at the courthouse over the last several weeks, raise questions about what comes next in a criminal case that appeared resolved by the 2010 conviction of Ingmar Guandique. The illegal immigrant from El Salvador is now serving a 60-year prison sentence in Levy's death, but the hearings could signal a problem with the prosecution of the case.
Authorities acknowledged they had no DNA evidence or witnesses linking Guandique to the crime, building their prosecution instead around a jailhouse informant who said Guandique had confessed behind bars that he was responsible for Levy's death. They also said the attack on Levy fit a pattern of assaults by Guandique on other female joggers in the same location where she went missing and during the same timeframe.
Guandique, who was already imprisoned for those attacks when he was accused in Levy's death in 2009, professed innocence at his sentencing hearing. His lawyers said police and prosecutors made him a scapegoat for a botched investigation.

9/11 knocked the Levy story off page one after a long-running episode that lasted the entire summer. It was years before they caught this creep. What are the hearings for? Condit must be passing kidney stones by now.
The convict who fingered Guandique lied and/or a new lawyer to the case has decided to make a name for himself with headlines of problematic hearsay. Roll cameras!
I specifcally recall that the perps DNA was found on the body and clothes of Ms. Chandra Levy. Was this left out of the trial for some reason?
The DNA matched neither Condit or the dude in prison...
Thought the opposite; that degradation and decomposition of entire crime scene rendered DNA unreliable; and/or unavailable. But ‘who knows’ - yet; anyway; as to what is unfolding here. Interesting; in any case. . .
And it must have been reliable since they could match test it against Condit's and Guandague...or whatever his name is.
Same guy killed Vince Foster. Not that it matters.
Vince Foster, Mary Pinchot Meyer, Marilyn Monroe, the D.C. Madam, et al.
Yuri?
Is Gary Condit testifying?
Remember the Vince Foster "suicide"? The body of the deceased in that case was also found in a DC area park and the same US Park Police had the initial jurisdiction.
Should Guandique's conviction be reversed, that would push the Levy murder investigation back to square one. In that event, it's quite apparent where the focus of a renewed investigation should be.
I don't know quite what you mean by that, but if Guandique's conviction is reversed, the investigation into Levy's death should be renewed. So who do you think is one of the prime suspects in that event?

Condidit!
Naw, I think Gary didn't do it that time ~ and most likely won't do it again, so there!
I'm biased towards the idea that a jail house confession is as good as anything ~
Then it's probably Joe Scarborough, Condidit's butt-boy.
Certainly not when you have unreliable witnesses testifying to what Guandique might have told them in jail, and getting rewarded for their testimony in the form of a reduced sentence, perhaps. Even if this Guandique is a bum, and he certainly seems to be one, a "jailhouse confession" by itself doesn't mean much without other specific evidence linking him to Levy or to perhaps someone else who knew Levy.
I don't have access to the Guandique trial transcript, but if the prosecution had stronger evidence linking Guandique to the Levy murder, we would probably know about it via the media during the time of the trial.
In the meantime, you can probably presume that this upcoming hearing scheduled in the case deals with some piece of newly discovered evidence that might work toward exonerating Guandique in Levy's murder.
...Which doesn't rule out the possibility that a goon or two hired by Condit did it.
Then, too, Condit's wife might have had a motive, but she was in California most of the time.
