Can improved labeling on food products help consumers make healthier choices? A new study by the Food and Drug Administration shows that it can. The FDA is in the process of updating the 20-year-old nutrition facts label that appears on all food and beverage products in the U.S.
The organizations researchers believe that improved labels may assist consumers in making healthier decisions about the food they buy.
The FDA commissioned the study as part of the action plan for its Obesity Working Group. The researchers' goal was to determine whether modifying the key elements of the nutrition facts label might help consumers better understand the nutrition label , and in turn make more healthful decisions while purchasing and eating food.
Survey research conducted by the FDA has shown that consumers have come to rely on the food label to determine the nutritional content of the food they eat. In fact, the percentage of consumers who report that they often read a food label the first time they purchase a food rose from 44 percent in 2002 to 54 percent in 2008, said Amy M. Lando, who co-led the study along with Serena C. Lo, Ph.D., also of the Food and Drug Administrations Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in College Park, Md.
To test the effectiveness of different labels, researchers created one new label that used two columns to display the nutritional details for a single serving of a product alongside the details for the entire package. The researchers also created labels that only displayed nutritional information for the entire package, rather than using the method of citing per-serving nutritional information.
In particular, we were interested in studying products that have two servings per container but that are customarily consumed in a single eating occasion, said Lando.

Funny!
The only folks who read them are those who care what they eat.
Politicians create jobs for bureaucrats ~ then they hire people to do those jobs. There’s actually little a bureaucrat can do about the politician. Voters can do something about the politicians.
Well how lucky was I! Sorry you seemed to live in such a terrible place! Out here in the wilds of California we often compare our youth experiences whenever THE VILLAGE imposes it’s better way upon us and we just can’t seem to come with any sad tales that compare to your childhood. Now here is where I get ruthless. Just cause it happened around you, doesn’t mean it’s widespread, maybe it’s just you! Live long, laugh often and don’t be so serious!
Or Ho ‘de ‘do disease when you are running for the elevator and discover you can’t run. (granted, that is an east coast, major city disease)
I buy and eat what I want and never look at a label.
The ‘Rats following their playbook:
Gun control for the law abiding, none for the outlaws.
Food labeling for the fit, none for the fat.
Fit and law abiding, you lose liberty.
Fat outlaws continue their merry ways....
Hey, stupid FDA! I thought it WAS per serving numbers that kept people from having to do math! Morons.
I am pretty sure people that buy “Liver Cheese” don’t care how many calories it has ...
yes this will make obese and overweight people stop going to mcdonalds, or if not that, just ordering salads.
i think fda has to stand for f***ing dumb asses.
Here’s a hint:
Insufficient food label information IS NOT THE CAUSE OF OBESITY!!!
“Warning! If you eat the this entire 2 lb. package of cookies at a single sitting, it may lead to obesity.”
Madison Avenue is laughing its collective ass off.
Disodium Guanalate ...
double salted bat shit.
Interestingly, some courts are now coming down on the over-reach of bureaucracies (FDA and EPA of late). Not sure how far up those decisions will hold, but it is encouraging.
We're becoming suckers in the marketplace.
All that new, healthy snack crap.....just give up snacks...get off your butt and take a walk.
Take a multiple vitamin everyday.
Although I have been told that soy is good for women going through the change.
Yep - labels solve everything....just ask a smoker how much attention he pays to the warning on the side of every pack.
Then some women develop an allergy to soy and soy byproducts.......... and it’s not good for them anymore.
First, a lot of the obese people can’t read. Second, they don’t give a damn.
Then, if this is such a great idea, why don’t we label guns better to stop mass shootings and call it a day.
“Caution. This gun can be dangerous. Do not scratch your head with the barrel of this gun while your finger is on the trigger. Be careful to point this gun away from yourself while operating. Do not use this gun while unconscious. Do not stand on this gun while operating. Do not use this gun underwater. Do not use this gun to pound in fence posts, to mix concrete, as a cue stick, as a hockey stick, or to hit fly balls. Do not imitate Elmer Fudd while using this gun. Do not plug the barrel of this gun with epoxy. Do not point this gun into the sky while standing on the top of a hill during a lightning storm. Do not shoot this gun into snow covered cars. DO NOT use this gun on innocent children in schools.”
There. Got it mostly covered.
Attention EPA, notify the NEA that people need to learn how to read in order to make your proposal possible.
That said, the peeps wouldn’t care even if they could read.
