Penney’s pinching vendors on pricing (Desperation at JCP)
NY Post ^ | 1/24/13 | JAMES COVERT

Fake prices are coming back at JCPenney, and this time they’ll be more fake than ever.

In a fresh bid to highlight Penney’s prices as low, CEO Ron Johnson is pushing some manufacturers to concoct phony suggested retail markups for their clothing, sources told The Post.

The plan, insiders say, includes erecting signs and fixtures that will display the sometimes made-up retail prices, while tagging the clothes and accessories themselves with Penney’s own lower prices.

“They want to have a table of sweaters with a sign saying ‘regular price, $30,’ and the price tag will be $22,’” one source told The Post in a hypothetical example.

Don’t most retailers play that game?

Why would anyone want to go there? Their pricing is higher than most other retailers.

I thought catering to the queers and lesbos was going to save JCP. NOT!

Well....they have to get the money to pay Ellen from somewhere. I guess their opinion is they Might as well gouge the remaining customers who aren’t smart enough to go somewhere else.

Yes. It got really bad during the Nixon wage and price controls. Retailers and manufactures locked-in absurdly high list prices in order to provide flexibility against the cap.

Bump!

Me neither.

There was a time back in the 80s when I bought most of my clothes there. They had nice, reasonably priced men’s suits and oxford cloth dress shirts.

We don't want to, but customers demand it. Far too many of them just won't buy unless they feel like they are getting a bargain (just as they feel like Obama cares about them), even if they know better intellectually. Emotion rules in retail, these days...

JC Penney made a huge mistake with flat pricing. People would rather buy a $39 item marked down to $19 than the exact same item with a flat $15 price tag.

Yeah, it’s kind of a problem for boycotts. It’s not a boycott if you were never going to buy their stuff in the first place. :P

My first job out of college was at JC Penney’s headquarters when it was in NYC. All the major retailers at the time were struggling for a raison d’etre. Unfortunately JCP got lost and their latest struggle with new mgt. was disasterous as has well been documented here on FR. They better change and change and change quick.....James Cash Penney must be turning in his grave.

Ron Johnson tenure at Penney’s has been a complete disaster! And it keeps getting worse and worse! What aren’t the shareholders demanding his firing is beyond me?

I am sorry.....because JCP when I was there was a top flight company. Many good people. I am sure there are many good people there. I hope they can get it “STRAIGHTend” out if you know what I mean.

I have long since divested my interest in this company. But I agree with you.

Kohls is the champion at that “discount” game, for sure.

I see JCP on a glide path to oblivion, along with Sears and Kmart.

Ever shop at Kohls? They are the pros at this.

Have a receipt in my hand. 1/19/13. I count 3 sets of "sleepware" (pajamas) at 12.99 each. 6 bras varying from 7.65 to 14.99, 10 sets of tights at 6.99 and 7.99.

Subtotal 181.00.

After 30% discount - 133.16.

At the bottom of the receipt - "YOU SAVED $260.30"

So, I walked out of there with nearly $400 in clothes for only 133? What a bargin!

:)
