The Anti-Defamation League is calling on critics of gun control legislation to stop using references to Hitler and the Nazis, calling such statements historically inaccurate and offensive, especially to Holocaust survivors and their families.
The ADL cites the following examples in a new press release:
The Drudge Report, under the headline White House Threatens Executive Orders on Guns, featured photos of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin (Jan. 9).We know that the national debate over gun control is one of the most divisive issues in the land, and while Americans are entitled to have strong opinions, there is also language that is inappropriate and offensive in any such discussion, Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, said in a statement. The idea that supporters of gun control are doing something akin to what Hitlers Germany did to strip citizens of guns in the run-up to the Second World War is historically inaccurate and offensive, especially to Holocaust survivors and their families.Former Major League pitcher John Rocker wrote on WorldNetDaily.com about what he described as the undeniable fact that the Holocaust would never have taken place had the Jewish citizenry of Hitlers Germany had the right to bear arms and defend themselves with those arms (Jan. 15).
During an interview on the Fox News Channel, Lars Larson suggested that, if the president does it that way, everybody in America will be required to go in and give fingerprints . It will be your papers, please like Nazi Germany (Jan. 9).
Ohio State Board of Education President Debe Tehrar reportedly posted a photo of Adolf Hitler on Facebook with a variety of anti-Obama, pro-gun slogans and images (Jan. 23).
Sean Hannity suggested on TalkingPointsMemo.com that defeating the Nazis was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby (Jan. 23).
Judge Andrew Napolitano, senior judicial analyst at Fox News, suggested in a column on Fox News.com that, If the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto had had the firepower and the ammunition that the Nazis did, some of Poland might have stayed free and more persons would have survived the Holocaust (Jan. 10).
Dear Anti Defamation League...please ditch your liberals.
They’ve ruined our country, and they’re working hard to ruin Israel.
Face it, the ObamaDORK has much more in common with Hitler (no education, no morals, no class, and never had a real job) than he has with any working American.
I am offended by the eternally-offended.
It’s a spot on analogy. If the ADL doesn’t like it then they should take it up with the Nazi gun grabbers.
ADL == ACLU
ACLU == SPLC
SPLC == CAIR
The principle of commutativity is applicable.
Abe Foxman is p!ssed because these Nazi references are so d@mn true...and effective.
Joseph Goebbels: Stop using Nazi analogies in gun debate
This is outrageously outrages!
Beam me the F up Scotty - up is down, down is up, good is bad, bad is good. Good to see John Rocker out there fighting the good fight.
Those who say “never again” stand by and even aid another socialist government in power and ready to deprive the people of a way to defend themselves. The history of the nazi atrocities belong to the world and if we don’t learn from history? I believe that the leadership of the “Anti-Defamation League” may be invested in the democrat party.
Stop comparing me to Obama!!
Compare and contrast.
Why do you think Obama wants a UNIVERSAL CITIZEN SERVICE?
It's a way around
Think it couldn't happen?
...especially to Holocaust survivors and their families.
There is a Holocaust survivor who lives in my town. She would tell her story to school children our area so they would know the truth about what happened to the Jewish people.
She said that the Belgium citizens had surrendered their guns to the government, leaving the country vulnerable for a take over. The Nazis cut the Belgium power grid, and once there was no communication, the soldiers would take over a community, leave a few soldiers to control the citizens, and move on to the next community.
It wasn’t until after the war that she found out about the concentration camps and fate of her father. She stressed, “Never give up your arms.”
OK, I am not the brightest person in the world, but what do the words, ‘Freedom of Speech’ mean?
ADL: Stop using historically accurate analogies to support the 2nd Amendment.
Up yours... pinkos.
ADL is not Holocaust survivors. In fact, I’ve just learned from someone who researched the subject that when Holocaust survivors arrived in Hollywood after the war, and these were European film industry professionals, they got a cold shoulder there, a reception of the sort “why did you survive?”
My pastor says “Can’t happen here? Yeah...right.”
