Demonstrators cheer as eviction of Springfield (MA) homeowner called off by Fannie Mae

Neighbors and activists, who stood out in the bitter cold for more an hour on Wednesday morning to protest the planned eviction of Jeffery Solivan of 32 Edgemont St., cheered after hearing that Fannie Mae had canceled its action.

The protest kicked off just before 8 a.m., initially with about a dozen people and grew to about 30 people when word came that the eviction was off. No date has been given for a new eviction.

Solivan said he hopes something can be negotiated with the lender that will allow him to keep his home, in the Pine Point neighborhood.

“It’s all I have besides my two cats,” Solivan said, shortly after the protest ended.

Solivan said he wants to thank Jesus who “made this miracle possible,” and was also thankful to the many supporters who came out on an extremely cold morning.

The anti-eviction demonstration was led by Springfield No One Leaves, a grassroots organization that is organizing families at risk of eviction.

IDK the particular virtues, more or less, of this homeowner, but take note: Identical scenes were enacted in the Great Depression, when neighbors and friends, sometimes with shotguns at the ready, defended hardworking neighbors who were down on their luck, from such evictions by the local sheriff, acting as the agent of some banker. How did that differ from this event? Would you have mocked them too?

Of course you are right, and I think the "Rent-a-Mob" did the right thing.

While the Obama economy has tanked, there are a lot of ordinary people left holding the bag. Unemployment like we have today leads to many hardships, like good people who did not want to default, being unable to pay their mortgage. It is a travesty to bail out banks and not bail out individuals.
