MILLER: National ‘assault weapon’ ban coming Thursday
The Washington Times ^ | 22 January, 2013 | Emily Miller

Posted on 01/23/2013 4:21:18 AM PST by marktwain

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office confirmed that she will be introducing in the Senate Thursday a new version of the so-called assault weapon ban. A spokesman said the full text will be released at a press conference on Thursday.

The California Democrat intends to expand on the ban that expired in 2004, by including handguns and shotguns, in addition to rifles. She would decrease from two to one the number of cosmetic features on a gun to have it be considered an “assault weapon.” This means that if a gun has just one item like a pistol grip or bayonet lug, then it is illegal. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the same ban in New York last week.

Furthermore, instead of grandfathering in current firearms, she would create a national gun registry for the government to track lawful gun owners. Magazines would again be limited to 10 rounds.

The Clinton-era bill was not renewed by Congress after the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement agencies reported that it was ineffective in reducing crime.

President Obama said that a top priority is to get “an assault weapons ban that is meaningful” passed this year.

A summary of Mrs. Feinstein’s legislation is below.

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of: 120 specifically-named firearms; certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics; and semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by: Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test; eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test; and banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans.

Lug and pistol grip control...that’s what we need! Lug and pistol grip free zones will do the trick!

"In 1999, 1000 rounds of .223 was $99 shipped. Now it’s closer to $1000 IF you can find it."

Pick up brass for free at the range, 2 lb.'s of powder (Hodgdon Varget or IMR4895), 500 small rifle primers, 500 53gr Hornady match HP bullets #2250, and one days work cleaning and trimming brass and I can reload $500 worth of ammo that is more accurate than factory rounds for $125. Trouble is now that every citizen is afraid they can't buy guns or ammo is making it even difficult to buy powder and primers. What used to be routine for us hunters and target shooters is now insane because of all the panic buying.

Nuts!

I agree completely. This is a deliberately overextended push so that anything less can be labeled a "compromise".

Which is fine if you happen to reside in the Beltway company-town echo chamber. If you live in the rest of the country, however, it's a red flag in front of an already pissed-off bull. DiFi isn't getting this one for free like she used to.

the echo chamber of the beltway has to be broken.

The MSM is blocking any outside the beltway reality.

You can find powder and primers online, but the shipping fees are st00pid. Unless you've got a group that will go in on a large order, it's almost not worth it.

Went to a couple places locally, including a Cabela's, sold out of everything I shoot.

Even fresh 10mm brass.

I have a 5 gallon bucket full of once fired .223 that needs processing. Kinda hard to find the motivation when I have nothing to put in them...

Nope, not illegal just must have a special license to own one.

Same thing as illegal for all practical purposes.

halo66 said: "Without a pistol grip...the gun doesn’t work."

Actually, the gun works fine.

The implication of Kalifornia law (and what DiFi is proposing) is that the pistol grip IS the assault weapon.

I own a rifle which used to have a pistol grip on it. By removing the grip, the rifle failed to become an assault weapon when the Kalifornia law was passed. If I was to re-attach the pistol grip (committing a crime), I would be manufacturing an "assault weapon".

Obviously, the pistol grip, all by itself, is the "assault weapon". Since my pistol grip is made completely of plastic, it is also able to escape detection by x-rays. What an evil device.

Last year at a Gun Show in Southern California, I heard that the Politicos were upset about the invention of “Bullet Buttons”, insisting that the Magazine should never be detached from the Rifle.

Instead, the “intention” of the TOOL requirement was to treat the Magazine as any other part of the Gun AND requiring that it be top loaded with the Magazine attached rather than removed, loaded and reinstalled.

One guy said that if the Magazine wasn’t attached to the Rifle, you could be committing a crime. That made me go WTF?

Again, this was just some people talking amongst themselves at a Gun Show, or as Liberals see it, a Terrorist Cell making plans to unseat the Dear Leader and his Royal Court

Kicking myself for not buying an AR style weapon a long time ago. Have some ammo on back order, but over 2000+ rounds just arrived for my Mosin-Nagant! As a kid I only had a single-shot .22, but I could still hit the can (that they made be toss) faster than my three buddies blasting away at it with their semi-autos. I’m hoping that is still the case!

Even the .22LR is rare at the stores nowadays.

Yep. Luckily, I believe in "buy cheap, stack deep". I have about 4 1/2 boxes of 550 count .22lr laying around.

As for my AR's... One has a 1:8 20" super-bull barrel on it. Prints clover-leafs @ 200 yrds with 6-12x55 glass on top. Even my zombie-slaying pirate gun has standard MATECH read and standard front sight iron sights with a co-witnessed Vortex red/green-dot.

I don't own anything I won't shoot. There are no "safe Queens" in my collection. Why buy a tool you don't plan on using?

Are these people insane?
No. They're evil, marxist tyrants.

Pistol grips and bayonet lugs do not kill people.
So, what? It's not about preventing violent crime, it's about disarming and controlling peaceable citizens. It's about dianne feinstein, barack hussein soetoro 0dinga whatever 0bama, george soros, and their cronies grinding YOUR face into the mud under heel of their jack-boots.

When was the last time one private citizen was bayoneted by another?
Never. So, you see, their entire premise is a lie, their entire program is bogus, everything they do serves only to advance tyranny.

“but over 2000+ rounds just arrived for my Mosin-Nagant!”

If I ran 2000 rounds through a Mosin-Nagant I would need orthopedic surgery.

So this is a rewrite of the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986

Registration is prohibited.
