The minister, Taro Aso, is only saying out loud what many government officials in countries with nationalized health care are thinking: people are getting older, living longer, and becoming a drain on our national budgets.
From the Guardian:
********
Japan's new government is barely a month old, and already one of its most senior members has insulted tens of millions of voters by suggesting that the elderly are an unnecessary drain on the country's finances.
Taro Aso, the finance minister, said on Monday that the elderly should be allowed to "hurry up and die" to relieve pressure on the state to pay for their medical care.
"Heaven forbid if you are forced to live on when you want to die. I would wake up feeling increasingly bad knowing that [treatment] was all being paid for by the government," he said during a meeting of the national council on social security reforms. "The problem won't be solved unless you let them hurry up and die."
Aso's comments are likely to cause offence in Japan, where almost a quarter of the 128 million population is aged over 60. The proportion is forecast to rise to 40% over the next 50 years.
********
The remarks are also an unwelcome distraction for the new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, whose first period as Japan's leader ended with his resignation after just a year, in 2007, partly due to a string of gaffes by members of his cabinet.
I am probably too old to see it, but I have little doubt that eventually, a "Solyent Green" scenario will become real and government will set up suicide centers for the elderly to "hurry up and die" if they wish.

“About 25% over 60 is bad enough, but 40% over 60? Thats catastrophic, no society can survive that. Japan will probably be wiped out long before 2050.”
Nope.
If anything, by 2050 Japan will be in comparatively better shape for the future than we here in the United States.
Not because Japan has too many “elderly”. Regardless of the average age of their population, they will still have a country in which virtually 100% of the citizens are “Japanese” (by birth and culture). It’s all-but impossible for a non-Japanese citizen to become “Japanese”. They protect their culture and their ethnicity.
Contrast that with -here-, where our cultural/ethnic demographics are changing with the speed of a Kansas cyclone. The United States — if it’s still even a “united” group of states by then — will have more “young people”, but fewer and fewer of them will actually be “Americans”...
That’s been Obama’s plan since the start of this health care bill. With the number of Baby Boomers getting up in age they are going to be consuming more of the health care dollar.
So not only will the government start rationing health care they will have to encourage assisted suicide.
It’s the only way the Government will be able to afford the increase in the cost of health care as time go’s on.
Yeah, we’re just waiting on the Sandman to come.
Youth, or at least this generation, really have no concept, and should the worst happen, they have the least ability of any to survive it.
Would you mind if I appropriated part of your comment for my new tag line?
“...its a very slippery slope for anyone else deemed to be inconvenient.”
Can we designate people of station in legislative, executive and judicial position for that slippery slope? Maybe we could even provide skis or toboggans.

New Japanese Finance Minister invited onward to join Ancestors.
Id be honored!
“I think the whole point of this thread is how wrong it is to view death as a solution to problems. Death IS the problem.”
Thats how liberals think. Snuffing someone with an actual design to kill you is not a problem, thats self defense. If a Jew or Kulak, found out about the plans of a Hitler or Stalin before they could get into gear. If they were sure they were serious,, i think it’s fine to rub ‘em out. It might even be a christian duty.
It sure as hell is common sense 101.
What you’re suggesting sure as hell isn’t self-defense.
Lead by example I say.
