A friend of mine from Pennsylvania called me today to tell me of her visit to a local WalMart, where she patronizes a bank located within this Walmart. It was Woodforest Bank. She slowly got incensed having to watch Candy Crowley on the omnipresent CNN,while waiting in line, and decided to do something about it. She started a conversation, which went on quite a while, with a trucker standing in front of her who as it turned out was a classic Low Information Voter, and kept trying to defend Obama, who he knew not surprisingly anything about. This got her more fired up, and she asked the teller why CNN was always on. The teller explained it wasn't her decision, but the decision of this entity called "Corporate". Now my friend wants to start a petition drive against CNN! I've noticed this too, everywhere from airports to pizzerias--it's mostly a phenomenon of these places which have large flat-screen TVs, which includes a LOT of places these days. Our question is, with a viewership of about 15% even less than MSNBC, and dropping like a stone (it's now about 650,000, to FOX's 1.9 million) HOW, pray tell, is CNN managing to keep itself pushed into this level of public exposure? A little research on my part shows me lots of others have noticed this too. Are they paying someone off, sort of like the way a food product can buy shelf space in a major supermarket to get exposure? If so, where is the money coming from?
Funny, I was talking to my wife about this the other night and we supposed that the 650K viewership is ENTIRELY made up of airports, hotels, and other lobbys across the US. I don’t believe even one person watches it in their homes.
CNN == INGSOC Telescreens
And if they’re SAMSUNG telescreens they will spy on you while you watch.
They are all phony numbers. CNN is all forced public viewing.
My last wait at an airport very few people were actually watching.
I may be wrong but i always suspected that it might be partly because fox news channel does not come with some of the cheaper cable packages whereas CNN does.
Good for you! I too was in a local doctor’s office/clinic that had CNN blaring the other day. I about went nuts as the anti-gun propaganda was overwhelming. Made a decision to contact “corporate” about that as well.
Darn tired of it!
CNN = visual equivalent of Muzak (sorry for the insult, Muzak).
My cardiologist’s office always has on a channel, whose programming consists primarily of Maury, Jerry Springer and other similar shows. Doesn’t do my heart much good watching a bunch of lowlifes screaming at each other or engaging in fistfights.
Always good to have your own device and earphones with you.
If the remote is handy or the TV’s controls accessible, I am never shy any more. I may ask if anyone minds, but I will either change the channel or at least turn the volume way down - Oil change shops, doctor’s offices, whereever. We’re the customer, dammit!
Anyway, what ever hapened to a good book?
A local Shell gasoline station that I patronize has a big screen mounted on the wall that is always tuned to Fox. The owner is a naturalized American, originally from India.
A lot of places used to put on Fox News since it was the number one cable news channel, but liberals are very tenacious about complaining about it.
This really highlights a big problem. For the left, politics is like a religion. They are very determined and fanatical when it comes to this stuff, and they do NOT like the population seeing opinions they don’t like. The same thing played out in our building. Every time the lobby TV’s were on Fox News (simply because it was the most popular cable channel) some liberal would demand the channel be changed.
So good on your for raising this issue. We really need to be as active as the left about this stuff. We need to start viewing this more like a war than political differences. Every single bit we can each do to help the cause really matters.
Don’t you and your friend have more important things to worry about? Nobody is being forced to look at the TV.
By the same token, when Republican candidates allow the opposition to determine the debate moderators, not only do they suffer tactical defeat, but their acquiescence also helps to de-legitimize the one network that is reasonably fair, and thus has strategic implications.
Can't anyone here play this game?
It’s not only that.
Consider - if you go on a business trip, what newspaper is likely delivered to your door as a courtesy by the hotel?
That’s right - USA Today.
Ever peruse that “paper”? Mid-Left in outlook, it will be found in most hotels and airports. Lots of people read it on the airplane too.
In order to fight this battle, hotels have to offer something more than USA Toady (intentional renaming).
Then we need to complain back.
The he!! with the Left!
2-3 years ago the tvs in the public areas of the local USAF medical clinic use to be on Fox. Since then, it is all CNN in every federal office I go to where there is a public area tv.
Thankfully, my cardiologist is very conservative and always has Fox News on in his waiting room.
>> Republicans are mired in myopic, purely-tactical thinking.
HAAAAAAA! Good one.
If only.
Republicans have NO ideals, NO principles, NO character, NO backbone. They don’t think, PERIOD. Strategically OR tactically.
They don’t lead, they react to what the other side throws at them. Ineffectively. Comically.
The (R)s only “quality” is that they’re merely rudderless and inept, whereas the ‘Rats are malignant evil. It’s not much, but it’s something.
Take my mom to local naval base once a week for her shopping, Fox
was on all public televisions. My local car wash always has Fox on
their TV also. I live in CA. pretty amazing!!!
