Instead of appropriately dealing with gang-related violence, an independent Chicago school closure commission is recommending no school closures because such a move could force students to cross gang lines.
So in Chicago, gang violence is the new normal and instead of combating and gaining some control over the problem, city leaders are simply accommodating it.
Wow. Gangs of street punks are now influencing public policy and million dollar decisions. It looks like they really have won.
Of course the Chicago Teachers Union, which stands to lose money if schools close, agrees with the recommendation.
The CTU has been arguing against school closures for some time, as the union is looking to stave off an increase in the number of non-union charter schools, which serve about 50,000 students. A moratorium on school closures would naturally mean that more union teachers will be needed and their dues money will keep flowing to the CTU.
Chicago Public Schools are facing a $1 billion budget deficit and now that the district has locked in an expensive three-year collective bargaining agreement with the CTU, reducing labor costs is not really an option. But consolidating schools and streamlining operations is.
But now taxpayers might have to continue to pay to operate half-empty schools because city leaders dont seem to be willing to deal with gangs. The Chicago Tribune reported there are 100,000 empty seats in schools in a district that has 400,000 students.
CPS built new schools to relieve overcrowding in some communities but failed to close enough of the older, emptier ones, often caving to community pressure, the newspaper reported.
Those half-empty schools are among the citys worst performers academically.
The latest excuse shows the CTU will stop at nothing to protect the miserable status quo, regardless of the consequences for Chicagos children.
Sounds like something you would expect in Mexico.
That’s quite a diss on Mexico. I think you should apologize and I’m not even Mexican, lol, :)

So, they admit the gangs rule Chicago...
Oh. When I saw the headline I thought it was going to be the old, “If we don’t keep them in school they’ll join gangs and run the streets,” argument that I’ve heard for years.
There may be pressure from the less violent public school parents not to close the most violent and then move those gang-bangers into the not-as-bad schools.
Kowtowing to thugs always turns out well.
Round up one thousand gang members. Hang one hundred of them. Repeat as necessary.
Teacher’s Unions and street gangs. Not much difference.
I don’t think the left really wants to eliminate gangs. After all gangs exist because of leftist policies that have destroyed the family and encouraged ghetto inhabitants to impregnate and run, leaving the taxpayers to pay the tab.
The left celebrates the single minority mother (the baby mommy) who breeds with multiple “baby daddies”.
Well, I agree about the articles that Mexicans may be beginning to take back their country. And, it does indeed appear that change is afoot in the trans Mexico/border states region. Some may like the change and some may not. Here’s a book I read not too long ago that I found very thought provoking. Its “The Next 100 Years, author George Friedman. Recommend it for sure.
I would love to see James O’Keefe’s “Project Veritas” (they did the Acorn exposes) send a few young staffers undercover as students into Chicago High schools..a few hours of tape would be fascinating..
No problem, just sell the failing schools to a non-union charter schools company. Students can continue to attend school near where they live, and not have to cross gang boundaries.
The Barbarian Hordes now rule in Chicago.
