A woman walking her dog at 3 p.m. Friday stumbled upon Larry Lovette lying on the sidewalk near Dimond Park. He had been shot to death. Just one half-hour before that, a 22-year-old man had been fatally shot in the Fruitvale district.
At 4:15 p.m., Eddiebo Rodriguez was shot several times while driving on West Street in West Oakland. Whoever killed him shot up some nearby homes in the process. Thankfully, no one else was injured. Then at 8:20 p.m., police found 17-year-old Ken Harbin shot to death on Hillside Avenue in East Oakland.
The carnage Friday took the insanity into a new stratosphere. Four street killings within six hours. Just like that, we're at six killings in five days. All except one happened in broad daylight.
Here is what that should tell you. The people shooting don't care who sees them or who gets hit.
At what point do we say that we have crossed a threshold, the violence in our city is so out of control that we cannot expect our police department on its own to stop it? That 15 deputies from Alameda County, though welcome, aren't going to cut it. That we don't have the luxury of waiting around for years' worth of police academies to get more police on the street.
That we need to take drastic action to stop the catastrophic loss of life -- mostly young lives.
I believe that time is now. It is time for the Oakland City Council to give serious consideration to declaring a state of emergency.

Another possibility is to let them live their little Third World lives.
The only problem is, the liberals will not allow us to discuss the real causes of most of the violence. A key reason is that so many of these young men are brought up in the baby mama culture, with no father in the home, raised without any values. They feel no remorse about killing people, even innocent people, who get in the way of their gang activity.
These are feral young boys and men we’re talking about. Liberals fixate on guns and other ancillary issues. We’re not allowed to talk about how these kids are being raised, what values they have, or don’t have, etc. We’re not allowed to talk about the baby mama culture, because liberals see that as an affront to “single mothers” everywhere.
There are many issues for which we can’t talk about the real problems. Instead we have to dance around the issues. In this case, liberals think if these gangs don’t have guns that the violence will cease. They also think that somehow the youth gangs will obey restrictive gun laws.
Bull’s eye of your assessment. Idiot lefties blame guns, Capitalism, and everything else.
The only people Oakland authorities have any interest in controlling are those that can be relieved of revenue for the city coffers, or bribes for the public “servants”.
The real reason liberal cities will be declaring martial law.....
Well, there would be a lot fewer gangsters in Oakland if the city hadn’t been welcoming them in.
They carefully refrain from saying who these guys are, but I would presume that they are either black or hispanic, or maybe one against the other.
The black gangs are the result of paying single women more welfare for every illegitimate child they have. The Hispanic gangs are largely the result of welcoming in illegal aliens. And both gangs are supported by the huge number of drug users who live in the Oakland area, giving the gangs plenty of clients.
Yes, a lot of this is the fault of LBJ and Obama and their like, who have built these gangs as reliable Democrat voters and election cheats. Also probably Obama gets a cut of the drug profits, like Billy Jeff did.
But the people of Oakland have encouraged the worst sort of people to live in their neighborhood. What else can they expect?

The war against capitalism is to create the economic conditions conducive to set the stage for their siege and the restriction and confiscation of guns is to prevent the rest of us from protecting and defending ourselves against them.

Sounds like civilization in decline. We are not moving towards the light. Despite more advanced technology we are heading for the dark ages.
Very little has changed in Oakland over many decades. The liberals simply feel now the time is right to acknowledge that a problem might even exist. My parents had a friend and buisiness associate murdered there in cold blood. My brother was robbed at gunpoint there. I had my car broken into there. And all of this happened decades before the existance of FreeRepublic. Everyone in the surrounding community knows going there during the day is risky, and at night isn’t even contemplated by the rational. Blacks killing largely blacks over drugs, turf wars, gang affiliation etc has been going on there forever. The more things change as they say.
I have a friend who lived and worked in LA for a while nearly 20 years ago. The had to keep tabs on which gang territory they were working in and dress accordingly. Also try to avoid working on borders between territories.

I’m thinking they should just ban all firearms. Once all the bad guys turn in their guns the violence would stop.
A lot of the people in these communities probably don’t care about the drug gangs, because they’re making money.
