A U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35 African nations early next year, part of an intensifying Pentagon effort to train countries to battle extremists.
The teams will be limited to training and equipping efforts, and won't be permitted to conduct military operations without specific, additional approval from the secretary of defense.
The sharper focus on Africa by the U.S. comes against a backdrop of widespread insurgent violence across North Africa, and as the African Union and other nations discuss military intervention in northern Mali.

I don’t care about Africa. It isn’t worth the life of a single American. And some say we must be there, or leave it to the Chinese. I think it would be better if the Chinese had it. They want to farm, build dams, build power plants, develop water, mine minerals, drill oil, cut timber, etc. Some Chinese men are even marrying African women due to the shortage at home.
All we do is send recent and current liberal college girls to teach them about condoms, useless solar ovens, and conflict resolution. And of course, they get a picaninny photo of themselves being adored by the children of a village.
And to cap it off, we will insist they worry about global warming when they already are filled with superstition.
another case of mission creep???
Thanks Lorianne.
Africa is full of natural resources that the Barry folks likely covet.
Mali was the base of Pakistan’s “Islamic Bomb” expert Qadeer Khan’s Africa operations. The interest in the region on our part, on china’s part and others, is control over uranium, cobalt, and associated heavy metals.
re: “We disagree. Part of the problems, is the half asses, unDeclared ‘War’s that we get involved in. If one wants to go to war, fine, Declare it and win it.”
Actually, I really don’t think we disagree. By “policing” I meant exactly what you said above - declare it and win it - or, allow the CIA to get rid of the trash undercover without the use of troops on the ground. We used to do this back in the 1950’s and early 1960’s.
re: “If we are going to police the world from dictators and communism ...
Then the first thing we should do is get the hell out of the UN .... then bulldoze the building into the East River.”
Totally agree!
