Capping three days of meetings on ways to stem gun violence in light of the Connecticut shootings last month, Vice President Joe Biden said on Friday he was interested in technology that would keep a gun from being fired by anyone other than the person who bought it.
And it became clear that President Barack Obama plans to push for a controversial ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to stem gun violence in his State of the Union address next month.
Technology for so-called smart guns is being developed, although, so far there has been little demand for it. Various techniques such as fingerprint recognition or the wearing of a magnetic ring would prevent anyone other than a weapons registered owner from firing it.
The National Rifle Association and other groups have come out against smart guns in the past and did not respond to a New York Times article on the subject this week. Instead, the NRA has placed most the blame for recent mass shootings on violent video games and lack of treatment for the mentally ill.

Just because they heard someone say “smartphone” these dumb politicians think there can be a smart gun.
Dear Joe: the problem is not the object. It’s the human holding it. Criminals are not the same as honest, law abiding people or police officers.
A smart Vice President would be a good start, but that is out of the question with Biden in the office.
I want my smart phone to be as reliable as my AR-15, not the reverse.
Makes its own bullets.
Never thought I’d see smart and Biden in the same sentence.
No wonder everyone is rushing to buy any kind of gun they can get their hands on.
By the time the Socialist model gun comes on the market, it will weigh at least 10 pounds, be plastered with warning labels, won’t work, and will cost $5000...the money going to a crony of Obama, of course. Only a total idiot would put Obama and Biden in charge of their family’s safety.
Dang it! You stole my reply. :)
It’s a trap.
Two words:
EMP.
Electromagnetic Pulse.
Police are already using it to disable cars (with only spotty success, but its a new technology). Older cars with no sensitive chip technology? Impervious. This could be modelled on “ Cash for Clunkers.” We’ll let you trade in your dangerous old guns for these shiny new “smart” weapons, because then when we come for you we can just turn your weapons off. Neat trick. So the only people buying “smart” guns will be, well, not so smart. To put it politely.
I remember cars with a seat belt interlock. You could not start the car without fastening your seatbelt.
Folks just disconnected the seatbelt interlock system.
“Need to put one of these in the hands of all criminals:”
Need to put one of these in the hands of all politicians. There, fixed it.
The question for America is..... Shouldn’t the nation have a smart vice president?
There have been quite a few cases of family members using their dad’s gun to protect the home.
Wonder how that will work if it is not set up for all family members.
I wonder how much it would cost to defeat this “smart” gun feature. Regardless of the price, I would happily upgrade every firearm I purchased with a mandatory flaw that severe. At least they are creating a business opportunity!
Did Joe find the high tech homing bullet with his name on it?
Second post, excellent!
Old Joe must have been reading The Weapon shops of Isher.
