In 1953, Leroy Anderson tried his hand at a piano concerto. The next year he conducted it with his pickup orchestra and Eugene List on piano. The reviews were mixed, and Leroy withdrew the piece. He put it on his list for revision but never got around to it. In 1988, his family had it published.

It’s easy to see why the New York music critics of the Fifties had problems with this piece. There is no 12-tone serialism, atonalism or Big Ideas. It’s unabashedly romantic, short and sweet. It has caught on in the Scandinavian countries.

Leroy had a sure grasp of musical architecture and the building blocks of a large piece. His development section has a fine fugue in the middle and a great horn passage in the recap. He segues into a slow movement in E Major with some fine horn work. Then he goes all South American.

Anderson: Piano Concerto in C (first and second movements)

The finale is wonderfully funny in an Aaron Copland folksy and western way. The cadenza is quite good with a hint of Gershwin.

(finale)

Leroy Anderson, piano concerto pushed to the side, kept writing his miniatures in the mid-Fifties. In his Yale lecture in 1973, Leroy said it took him little time to turn out one of these pieces. If he had trouble with it, as a rule the final product wasn’t worth much.

This one has a Latin flavor.

Anderson: “The Girl in Satin”

Mix a little Brahms and Grieg, and you get this. It’s beautiful.

”The First Day of Spring”

This one is a classic and incredibly moving. It features a rare solo piano part.

”Forgotten Dreams”

One of his most famous pieces, beloved by all silver-tongued trumpet players.

”Bugler’s Holiday”

Another classic from the mid-Fifties.

”Sandpaper Ballet”

In 1958, it was time for Leroy Anderson to make his mark on Broadway. The project was “Goldilocks”, featuring a book by Walter and Jean Kerr, and music by Leroy. It opened – and closed. The critics were unanimous: the music was fine, but the book was terrible, and the show was weak. So much for Broadway.

After “Goldilocks”, Leroy wrote a few new pieces, but they weren’t in the same league as what had gone before. Something had gone out of him. He and his wife and kids settled down comfortably in Connecticut, and there was no problem with money thanks to fat royalty pay outs. He took to guest-conducting orchestras for his pieces, and he served on the boards of a number of local orchestras. In 1972, the Boston Pops dedicated an entire “Evening at Pops” to Leroy Anderson’s music, broadcast on PBS, and Fielder even handed the baton to Leroy for “The Typewriter” while Fiedler played the typewriter. His 1973 lecture at Yale is a classic, and recordings are impossible to find.

Leroy Anderson died of stomach cancer in 1975 and left behind a major body of work. It lives on today. Everybody knows his music, but not everybody knows his name.

Good evening, Drumbo, and thanks for spinning tunes for the troops. ((HUGS))

The whole country seems to be having weird weather...how about you?

We are supposed to have a little snow tonight and Saturday, and then warm up to 40 and have rain Sunday and Monday. Then drop back into the teens by Wednesday. There ought to be a law about the temps in winter...never above 28 until winter is over.
