ARAB, Alabama - In reaction to the deadly school shooting in Connecticut last month, Arab City Schools have installed armed police officers at each of its four campuses.
It's costing the system $66,000 through the end of 2013, according to Superintendent John Mullins.
"We made a decision that while it's a substantial amount of money, there's no monetary value on the safety of our children," Mullins said.

Looks as if A-rab made a good decision for their schools.
Good for them, but there is a less expensive alternative.
Ineffectual, transfers money from the private hands to unionized public employees, and gets the kiddies accustomed to living in a police state.
Win-win-win for the left.
Not unlike the little town on I-10 in West Texas, Iraan, pronounced Ira-ann. lol
Agreed. Simply allowing staff to be armed and removing the signs that announce free fire zones is really all you can ever do.
The simple fact is that there is not a crazed gunman hiding in the bushes outside every school in America. Where I went to school there are nearly 30 exits. Better to leave a potential gunman guessing.
Looks like the white house is already considering the possibilities.

$66,000 covering 4 schools?
$16,500 per school
$1375 per month per school
Roughly $63 per day
roughly $7.80 per hour, 8 hour day
Pretty good deal for armed and trained guards
I say we should require the kids to take guns to school, and to take classes in use and safety.
I remember some 20+ years back, a local pizza place being the frequent target of holdups. The holdups abruptly halted when every staff member started wearing a shoulder holster and firearm.
Arming the staff is the very best deterrent.
"Statistically proven deterrents for a school shooting is having an armed officer"
If a little podunk town in Alabama has this information why isn't this brought out in the media? (I know...I know)
yep, that’s right. There are at least 5 international companies with offices/businesses located in Marshall County.
Arab is about 20 minutes south of Redstone Arsenal and about an hour north of Birmingham.
Guess they feel an armed guard is necessary, but I still think having armed staff would be better. After all, even with the foreigners temporarily living here, it’s still Alabama for heaven’s sake. Nearly everyone here owns a weapon.
the same and even better protection could be provided by having volunteers.....why not try that first?.......we don’t need another army of govt employees to fund/benefit/pension at age 40.
volunteer firemen do not get paid, but at least in our area, if you give 20 yrs you can get a small pension at at 62 or 65 as a thankyou...
why not the same for policing?...especially schools...do we really want more govt interference in schools?
Stars Fell on Alabama?
No, I think those may be the state residents with laser sighting devices
All this throwing off on the idea of police officers on school campuses sounds more than a little ridiculous, unless some think police aren’t necessary at all for any purpose.
While in session, schools have one of the greatest concentrations of people in a small area of any place in a community. Why shouldn’t some police be stationed there while school is in session? Aren’t the schools as important as city streets and neighborhoods and business districts?
There are no perfect solutions, but having police around schools is a sensible idea, and it was a sensible idea before we ever had the first school shooting.
Now if the school can just utilize the , presumably knowledgeable, trained, capable, officers to gradually educate the rest of the staff to handle basic firearms they’d be in position to be really effective at “school defense”. In the end any defense system must be mobile and somewhat un-predictable to an outsider. Never present the same “face”or “look” to a potential trouble maker. A staff uniformed officer might very well become a first target himself. Let the armed person(s) do double duty as, oh, say, custodians, coaches, shop teachers, persons who are not necessarily tied to a classroom and might be anyplace at any time. Don’t make them look like ticket takers at the front door. In my growing up years we kids had more guns than the teachers. Nearly every car in the student parking lot had at least a highpower rifle. An outsider screwing off at that school would have hit a hard wall.
It's in Alabama so odds are the teachers know how to shoot. They just need to be allowed to carry there.
