Yesterday, I joined the NRA. I need some advice as what to do next. Buy a gun? Go to an NRA meeting and find out what type of gun is right for me?

I’m so proud I finally took this small step.

As you should be, MM.

I suggest you find a good local gun range, ask for a qualified instructor who will teach you how to handle a firearm properly, give you NRA certification, and select a weapon that's just right for you.

First comes training: safety and then shooting technique. I'd inquire through the NRA or local shooting sports association to see what is available in your area. It may be a formal course of instruction for a fee or you might be put in touch with a qualified person who is willing to instruct. Many people will go out of their way to help a beginner.

As for the type of gun, that depends on its intended purpose and your individual needs and preferences. It's best to get a variety of opinions and test-shoot a number of guns before making your decision.

Training your mind is more important in some ways than training your body. You must cultivate the mindset necessary to employ deadly force without qualms or hesitation. You can always wrestle with your conscience later.

Suggest finding a martial arts school that trains for the warrior mindset. The bonus is that not only will you expand the envelope of options for the use of force, you’ll learn the restraint and presence of mind that will assist you in avoiding conflict in the first place.

I’m told the GOA (Gun Owners of America) is a better organization than the NRA. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but the NRA is better known.

Go to an indoor range that rents guns. Start shooting what you think you want and you’ll discover what you actually want.

You might want to contact a local gun club. AR-15.com has good hometown forums for each state. If you ask for help there, you'd probably get some good tips. They probably have members who are NRA instructors.

I'd be thinking of both a handgun and a long gun for the home. An AR-15 is best in that regard, but prices/availability right now make it out of reach for most right now.

Yesterday, I joined the NRA.

Congrats! I would suggest you contact a local gun club about taking courses. I took one that was all for women only and it was a blast!

You should quit the NRA and join the GOA.
