Christie's Time cover upsets N.J. Italian-American advocacy group

A New Jersey-based Italian-American advocacy group is upset with the portrayal of Gov. Chris Christie on Time magazine's cover this week.

“To me, it was just the typical smearing of Italian-Americans ,” said Andre’ DiMino, president of the Italian-American One Voice Coalition. “Regardless of who the person is, but making it look like a mug shot and saying ‘boss.’”

Christie took issue with the cover layout in an appearance this morning on “Imus in the Morning,” suggesting it made him look like a mob boss and was “not kind.”

DiMino said that although the cover made no mention of the fact that Christie is part Italian-American, “in the rest of the country this will just put out that subliminal message that Christie and the mafia is the same.”

They gave Palin... a disturbingly extreme close up

That was Newsweek, not Time. Time was pretty decent to Palin. But here is another conservative who got "the treatment":

And these idiots pose for them too, doing everything the photog says like a fashion model.

Not necessarily. Professional cameras have very fast motors that take multiple shots per second, bam!bam!bam!bam!bam!

Nor do public figures have control over which shots are used -- the editor does. For all you know, the photographer just said something disgusting or insulting to Christie, and this was his completely unposed reaction.

...So everyone thought he was something he wasn’t...

That's right and he fooled a lot of Freepers. Remember a couple years ago (I'm guessing about the time frame) when they thought ol' Christie was the cat's meow and surely should be the Republicans' nominee for president?

We see that a lot on FR. Scott Brown is another example that Freepers went gaga about.

Christie can take a joke? He seems pretty thin-skinned to me (only thin thing on ‘em!)

Well, then the photo-victims need to craft the cover photo they want and submit it to the RATagandist "editor".

Take it, or leave it.

Quite frankly, I do no see what Christie did post Sandy that everyone is raving about.

Supplies were not pre-positioned, even with a week;s notice of the storm. The NJ Transit officials who parked the rolling stock in the lowest yard in the system for the storm, are still n the job after one third of the rolling stock and engines were flooded.

Gasoline station lines after Sandy were longer than in 1974, the first gas crisis.

If it were not for the churches and civic groups that organized REAL relief efforts in the days and weeks after the storm, the event would have been a total disaster. And based on emails between his office and me, he still refuses to believe that non-union utility crews were turned away from NJ by the unions, in spite of documented evidence proving the point. FEMA has been another disaster inflicted on NJ, but Christie saves his ire for John Boehner and the GOP. No mention of Harry Reid holding up the aid bill and then porking it up to an almost unrecognizable state.

It turns out that Hurricane Irene in 2011 was a dress rehearsal for Tropical Storm Sandy a year later, and Irene was another disaster, with hundreds of thousands without power for a week or more. In densely populated NJ, that is unbelievable. Obviously, lessons were not learned.

He is like a male Christine Todd Whitman.Another GOP wonder who ended up disappointing greatly.

His shameless pandering to the Traitor-in-Chief was disgusting. And to Bruce Springsteen as well.

Other than a few photo-ops, he really did not spend a whole lot of time at the shore, even though Trenton is only one hour away to the west.

I left Jersey six years ago, but have family still there, in Toms River, which was hit hard by Sandy(8,000 structures destroyed in a town of about 100,000). They all want to leave.

The shame of it is, NJ is one of the most beautiful states in the USA—it has everything-—tremendous beaut, mountains, farms, vistas, beaches, history going back almost 350 years—— once you leave the Turnpike corridor, but it has been pillaged by both parties for the last 30 years.

With all due respect, you live in a fantasy world about how publishing is done. However, I agree that public figures, especially on the right, cannot just take for granted that publications will be fair or kind, and should always use an agent and a contract approval clause for a portrait. It won't stop the widespread use of unflattering candids in the public domain, however.

When I say “they” I lump in all popular magazines. For what is the difference between Time, Newsweek, People, Sports Illustrated, Playboy, etc., really?

On his mother's side. You can kind of guess from his complexion and features.

If you meet somebody from Jersey and can't automatically "place" them ethnically, Irish or Italian are as good a place as any to start.

In any case, Chris Christie certainly didn't look much like Tom Kean or Christine Todd Whitman or any Frelinghuysen.

With all due respect...who cares? The news-rag business is all but dead. Screw those RAT magazines, my last comment was take it or leave it....no photo.

If "the press" can sue websites for reproducing their articles without permission, then individuals should also be able to sue for unauthorized use of the "intellectual property" of their images.
