Across the United States, college administrators are poring over student essays, recommendation letters and SAT scores as they select a freshman class for the fall. If this is like most years, administrators at top schools such as Harvard and Stanford will try hard to find talented high school students from poor families in a push to increase the socioeconomic diversity on campus and to counter the growing concern that highly selective colleges cater mainly to students from privileged backgrounds.

"Imagine a student who is the only student who is a likely candidate for a place like Harvard or Stanford or University of Chicago and he's not just the only student in his or her high school, but he's the only student that that high school has graduated like that in, say, three or four years," Hoxby says.
Without mentors and academically talented peers, Hoxby says, many of these students fail to apply to schools that can offer them a premium education free of charge. And because the students are widely dispersed across the 42,000 high schools in the country, college recruiters have a hard time finding them.

At some point, after pissing in the educational pool for decades in the name of social justice, your pool becomes loaded with filth.
Harvard and these other institutes of “higher” learning could burn to the ground tomorrow, and I wouldn’t shed a single tear.
“Hoxby says some college administers had confided to her that they had reluctantly come to the conclusion that the pool of low-income students with top academic credentials was just limited, and there wasn’t much they could do to change that.
But in an analysis published with Christopher Avery in December, Hoxby has shown that this conclusion isn’t true...”
BS. It is true. Trust me... if you have a good ACT scores, they’ll find you. The “pool” they’re looking at IS limited.
The truth is they are looking for low income kids, but not white ones.
Minorities, diversity, anything but white.
If you are Chinese or Korean and applying to these schools, you are at a true disadvantage. These schools severely discriminate against Asians.
Harvard paid Paleface Lizzy Warren over $300,000 to teach one class.
Harvard - They’ve got more money than brains.
Several of my daughter’s classmates applied to Harvard and other schools, and were accepted with full scholarships - they just couldn’t afford the more than $10,000 the university demanded to pay for their university mandated health insurance, and instead took full offers from other institutions.
Going to an elite college means nothing anymore.

For real?
Most low-income cultures do not value the character traits necessary. It's a sad truth, but it can't be avoided by wishing it away.
ACT or SAT ... and if you do well on the PSAT, every university knows about it.

True.

This is one quality that is, to some extent, measured by standardized test scores. The tests don't give extra points for being a nice kid who doesn't cause trouble in class.
“Going to an elite college means nothing anymore.”
True. I have a friend who went to UC Berkeley while I went to a culinary academy. Four years later she’s piling up debt and is worried about finding work after she graduates this year. Me? I work sporadically, am married, have four kids, and have no debt. My girlfriend can’t even imagine being where I am for at least 15-20 years.
In short, elite colleges are a scam and the reason the banks make student loans is because it’s illegal for them to buy slaves.
Dem standarzied tests be racist!!
That’s not completely true. If you’re an engineer, schools like MIT, Purdue, Carnegie Melon, Stanford, etc. help with better job placement. Certain financial institutions only hire from top tier MBA programs. If you’re taking AA or women’s studies, Starbucks doesn’t care.
My oldest boy was getting calls from places we’d never heard of, with scholarship offers, just because of his PSAT and SAT verbal scores. If he wanted a liberal-arts school, it would have been great, but he plans to study business ;-).
Bring ‘em in and flunk ‘em out. Most the time, they are poor because their parents are stupid. Sometimes you’ll find a kid whose parents are just lazy or unmotivated but smart. But most of the time, it’s not the case.
I know, it’s totally unfair. The test doesn’t care how hard you’re trying, or what obstacles you’ve overcome in life ... only whether you got the right answer.
