EXCLUSIVE: Cuomo Close To Announcing Sweeping New Gun Control Laws
CBS ^ | Jan. 8, 2013 | Staff

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A deal to give New York one of the toughest gun control laws in the nation is being negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who, sources said Tuesday, is hoping to announce the plan Wednesday during his State of the State speech in Albany.

Cuomo hopes to jump-start the 2013 legislative session with a big deal that could dramatically alter gun control laws across the state.

Highly placed sources told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer that Cuomo is negotiating with Assembly and Senate leaders for a package of gun control laws that would be a dramatic response to the gun violence besetting the nation, including the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“It’s a very divisive topic,” Cuomo said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of energy on both sides. Some people are vehemently against’ some people think we’re out of our minds for not passing it.”

Sources told Kramer the governor and lawmakers are negotiating furiously in the hope that Cuomo can announce a deal during his speech Thursday.

Sources said the package is expected to include:

* New restrictions on assault weapons

* Stiffer penalties for using a gun to commit a crime

* New limits on the number of bullets in a gun magazine

“Gun control is highly political, politically contentious situation. It is polarizing,” Cuomo said.

In Westchester County, where Mamaroneck’s Hommocks Middle School was under lockdown last week amid reports a gunman tried to enter the school, the need for gun control is on the minds of many.

“There’s just too many incidents that are happening that you think could be avoided if there were stronger regulations about it,” one mother from Larchmont said, adding when asked if her children’s safety is her motivation, “Absolutely, I mean you can’t even send them to school now. Now my kids have police in front of their school. I mean you wonder how far it’s going to go.”

“I think it’s necessary with everything that’s happening,” Mamaroneck resident Gail Nubile added. “With the recent things that have been going on it does make you think that things to be happening, so you have to be extra cautious.”

Cuomo’s move comes as Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Gun Violence released a new commercial to push for federal action. It features the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, who was killed two years ago Tuesday in the Tucson, Ariz., massacre.

“How many more children must die before Washington does something to end our gun violence problem?” the ad says.

It would be quite a coup for Cuomo, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, to show progress on gun control while Washington dithers.

Wake up, America.

They didn't wake up after four years of Dumbo - I see no hope now on this polarizing issue. We are doomed I say. Fewer gun owners than there are gun haters.

I’m guessing NY has lots of money for lawyers.... and Cuomo needs to find some of his buddies jobs.

This should cost the state a few million.

You also have to find all of his horcruxes and destroy them without him twigging, or he’ll come back, just like last time.

I never read "Clockwork Orange," so I have no idea what that means. Is it something like driving a stake through a vampire's heart?

NY already has a 10 round mag limit...and they’re going to reduce it.

It would be quite a coup for Cuomo, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, to crash his political career before it began.

Unless it includes enforcement against criminals who have guns, it is only an assault on innocent gun owners.

Right! And 1 ... 5 ... 10 years after this law is enacted, when the murder rate in NYC is unchanged (or goes up), you won't hear a peep from the liberals about how their hastily drawn up gun grab was a failure.

Being a liberal is never having to say you're sorry ... or wrong.

These bastards won’t be happy until there is another Waco. Where a federal agency is so hyped up to grab some guns that were banned it winds up being responsible for the death of DOZENS of people including 20 kids.
Thats when the country goes, “oh okay maybe these laws are only designed to control the non-criminal in every way possible.”
I’ll be damn if the Lawyers of The United States, other wise know as the house and senate, are gonna keep me from defending myself or property. So they’re gonna start criminalizing average people again while the thugs and thieves sucking our country dry and killing it’s culture get a pass. F*ck em.

Just like the pundits saying, “If such and such happens it’s over”. It’s been over for a long time, not that I’m done fighting, but it’s over.

I want to see just one New York law maker introduce a bill that the Governor may not posses any "guns" nor may (s)he have armed guards; either private or public within 1000 meters of their position at all times. This bill would be binding and going forward even into the governors stepping down, being relieved or otherwise being done with office.

Lets see that asshole put his political capital where his mouth is.

Yep. The state makes a law that the constitution says they can’t make.

Well Cuomo better start with the mob. I understand his daddy may have mob connections. Let them surrender their guns first before they come for ours.

One overlooked aspect of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland is that it was a failure of gun control. After the failed rebellion of 1717, the British Government had placed restrictions on the possession of weapons on the Highlanders. But the implementation of those restrictions was largely left to the Lords and Chieftains.

Since their willingness to vigorously enforce the gun control rules of the British Government was basically inversely proportionate to their propensity to rebel against the British Government, when Bonnie Prince Charlie landed, the Lords and Chieftains loyal to the British Government found that their disarmed tenants and clansmen were in no position to resist the firearms and swords in the hands of the tenants and clansmen of the Lords and Chieftains who joined Bonnie Prince Charlie.

One doesn't expect Liberal Democrats to have ever read any real history, but I'm a bit surprised that the Jesuits at Fordham didn't drum a bit of it into Cuomo's head.
