Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service to their old cronies in the burglary trade.
The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.
That was the most asinine article Ive ever seen, said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. Having a list of who has a gun is like gold - why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?
"What they did was insanity," added Shaw, author of "License to Steal," a book about his criminal career.

The cops around her say Keep your blinds closed when not at home, and open when you are. So a burglar will aways hit the homes with closed blinds.
Close the blinds, lay down a bedroll on the living room floor, put an AR-15 by your side and sleep with your ears open....
So kinda like you hunting for burglars...
I wonder if Cabeleas makes a “burgular call” device of some sort...
I agree wholeheartedly with the author, however, a problem also develops because many of those homeowners work in New York and cannot carry their guns with them. So, now I know that ten people in your neighborhood have guns and work in New York.....those are the homes I hit because there is a gun there and no one is home....just the gun.
“There are pros and cons for both which is better fro home defense.”
I like Kel-Tec’s new bullpup KSG-15 pump shotgun with dual magazines. Fifteen shells (seven in each magazine, one “up the spout”). Short for easy maneuverability in-home.

Yeah... except you can’t get one... try finding one. :-(
Thanks. that seems new. looks very cool.
unfortunately pistol grips illegal in NJ.
You could have given your esteemed guests a few pieces of copper at several hundred feet per second, just to be sociable.
That was immediately obvious to anyone with a functioning IQ above 70.
Obviously it didn't occur to that newspaper staff. So much for U.S. "journalism" and its "journalists".
Funny though, that brief time of goblins trying to move into an older neighborhood stopped suddenly, for some reason. Safer places to be for them, I suppose.

What Walter T Shaw and his ilk also know is people who work for the Journal don't own guns...
"Oh what a tangled web we weave... "...
Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them. And burglars, by all means, don't be shy about opening fire on the unarmed homeowners! Just pretend you're a liberal and that your victims are NRA members.
If that were to happen, there would be reporters on the gun owner list. And there would be some surprising names on that media gun owner list. Obvious examples include crime reporters and women reporters who have had nasty divorces.
Some of us who strongly support the First Amendment realize you can't undercut the Second Amendment without undercutting the First Amendment as well.
I've written more here:

State laws differ, and this could not have happened in Missouri. Under RSMo. 571.101.9, qualifications to carry a concealed weapon, which are the only sort of records of gun ownership maintained in Missouri, are not open to the public.
I don't think it could have happened in any other state where I've worked as a reporter. It looks like New York has a damaging loophole that needs to be closed, and I hope the NRA is working hard right now to check the laws of the other states to see how many other states there are where something like this could blow up.
I am normally a huge advocate of public access to government information the government does, after all, work for the taxpayers, not other way around and I have a decades-long history of fighting for access to records that some people don't want publicized. However, I can see absolutely no valid reason for gun ownership records to be public, and it's obvious that a lot of damage has already been done by publicizing them in New York.
The New York loophole needs to be closed.
Didn't realize fertilizer prices were that high.
Well unless they have a forklift, cutting torch and some C-4 they are going to be disappointed in my house.

Oh, it occurred to them, alright. They just didn’t care.
I wonder how many people who were not sure about becoming an owner now believe they HAVE TO become owners inorder to stay on the “do not rob” list.
