In 2012, 532 people were murdered in the city of Chicago, according to statistics compiled by the Crime in Chicago website. The number of people murdered the year before was 441, meaning in the city of Chicago, murders have increased by 91 from 2011 to 2012.
The Chicago Police Department was not available to confirm these numbers today, which is New Year's Day.
The website also claims that, through December 25, 2012, there 2,670 people were shot in Chicago last year. That's also an increase from the year before, when 2,217 people were shot in Chicago that year.
In all, it means that on average almost 1.5 people were murdered in Chicago each day last year, while on average 7.3 people were shot each day.
Official numbers from the city of Chicago appear to be a tad bit lower, however.
Last week Chicago marked its 500 homicide this year. "The city has seen its 500th homicide for 2012, a tragic number that is reflective of the gang violence and proliferation of illegal guns that have plagued some of our neighborhoods," said Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy in a statement last week.
"Every homicide in Chicago is unacceptable to me and the hardworking men and women of the Chicago Police Department, who, this year, achieved a record drop in overall crime throughout our city."
The mayor of Chicago is Rahm Emanuel, who came into office in 2011.

No doubt many were murdered because they were not Armed..
Democrat firearms violence almost exclusively in Chicago - far, far more of this than by Republicans with legal firearms.
If you take the white population in America I am sure our violence crimes rate is very low and is comparable (or better) with England, Australia, Canada and the more peaceful European nations such as Scandinavia
OK I would agree that there were over 500 homicides in Chicago last year but not 500 murders.Homicide is a death in which another person had some part in the death. Murder is a finding of a court or corners inquest. A murder is always a homicide but not all homicides are murders. For all of these homicides to have been found to be murders that would mean that every one of them had been solved and adjudicated to completion. No way in hell has that happened. If a felon is killed by a LEO while committing a crime that would be a homicide but not a murder. If you shot an armed intruder in your home that is also a homicide but not a murder. These two example are justifiable homicide, not murder.
The people who write these articles know the difference and print lies anyway to make a good story. This is very unprofessional.
It is. black on black violence accounts for over 90% of their fatalities.
I’m betting they can make it to 1,000 this year if they put their minds to it.
How many of the deaths were gangs killing each other?
Interesting how CNN doesn’t cover this story, or spend an entire week going over each individual who died in Chicago over the last year.
Where are Cindy Sheehan, Jesse Jackson, Code Pink, Al Sharpton, the NAACP, ACORN, Int’l ANSWER, the SEIU, Benjamin Crump, Michelle Obama and the rest of that crew?
I wonder if the shooters were clinging to their bibles.
[ I wonder if the shooters were clinging to their bibles.]
Some of the victims no doubt couldn’t even read.. the bible or the Quran..
Some pages of the bible could make good rolling paper..
You buy them bibles, they smoke the pages..
Lets see, murders up, shootings up but crime is down.......What happened, did they stop giving out speeding tickets?
A 20% kill rate with all of those shootings!!?? A lot of people can’t shoot straight in Chi-town.
Keep in mind that NYC had 2,000 under Dinkins. Yes, NYC has triple the number of residents, but it is still substantially more per capita.

There was a Jamaican gang called the shower posse who would point and spray (bullets)
