LIVING PRAYER

Brother Lawrence was a monk who lived almost 300 years ago and worked in the galley of his monastery. He wrote a book, The Practice of the Presence of God, which today is considered a classic in the area of Christian devotion. Brother Lawrence spent much of his time in the monastery scullery scrubbing pots and pans. He also had a collateral duty as the monastery cobbler. In these jobs, he said, he learned to glorify God in simple tasks and to pray with his hands. By bringing to each small job the best of his ability, he developed the practice of living prayer. Whether he was bustling around the galley, repairing shoes or kneeling in prayer, he learned to grow spiritually as well as mentally and to cultivate a never-ending, ever-deepening sense of God's presence.

Each day you do hundreds of small tasks. Perhaps you feel at times unrecognized or unnoticed, or that your job is insignificant in the great scope of things. The fact is it doesn't matter what you do or what position you hold. What really matters is the spirit in which you work, and how you approach your work. Brother Lawrence teaches us an important and very wise lesson: even the simplest tasks, when done to the best of your ability, are important in God's eyes. Whenever you bring to any job the best of yourself, your fullest mind, an honest heart, and a striving for excellence, then your work, no matter what you do, becomes like a living prayer to God.

CAPT Jane F. Vieira, CHC, USN

Back in the 80's I took sight-singing classes for a couple of years. We had a song to help us remember each interval - naturally our song for the tritone was "Maria."

The Toreador song from Carmen:

Life is hard
without a green— card
You have to get paid
under the table.
It’s not a fable
If you are able
You can babysit or garden somebody’s yard!
It’s OK
to take a job away
from someone who has tried
to get here legally
But they’re forgiving
To give you their living
After all, that is the American Way!
School is free
And only recently
they’ve vowed to teach the classes
all bilingually!
Medical care is a breeze.
They want you to feel— at ease!
(These folks are jokes. I know the ropes!)
Ahhhh Jump down the tunnel
wiggle through the hedge
It’s not that dense
(Slip Through the fence)
Hide beneath the back seat of a car
they won’t see where you are
It’s really not that far
I guarantee!
And you are home, scott free!

I’m an expert in this kind of work
It’s people just like you, in whom I specialize
Your life’s pathetic
But I’m sympathetic
I have all the answers right before your eyes!
I can hide
A family deep inside
An old container truck
It is an easy task
If it’s too hot in there
I’ve drilled some holes for air
Everything you own’s the only payment I ask!
Tell your neighbors and
Go tell your friends
I have their ticket to
A new beginning
I can get you there alive
You’ll get rich, if you survive!
(And sure. Abdou
Can come with You!)

Ahhhh Swim the big River, drop down to a crawl
Till you can find the hole in the wall
It’s only a few miles through the brush
And the dawn’s early Blush
Will light your merry way
To start your stay
In-—the U. S. A.

And the Perfect Fourth was “Here Comes The Bride” I’ll bet.

The Theme song from the Simpsons ALSO uses the tritone! LOL!!!

A goodly number of years ago, I was in the Old Spaghetti Factory in Seattle on a late Sunday afternoon. For no reason at all, I began to whistle the Toreador Song from "Carmen". All of a sudden the entire crowd waiting for seats began singing it in the operatic arrangement.

It turned out that the chorus from the Seattle Opera was there for dinner after a matinee performance of "Carmen". I'm sure they thought it was funny, but I was looking for a place to hide.

MAY THE BLESSINGS OF OUR LORD DESCEND UPON YOU AND REMAIN WITH YOU FOREVER

St. Patrick Window,
St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church,
Laurel, Maryland

ST. PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with His Baptism,
Through the strength of His Crucifixion with His Burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection with His Ascension,
Through the strength of His Descent for the Judgment of Doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of Cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In the service of archangels,
In hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In prayers of patriarchs,
In predictions of prophets,
In preaching of apostles,
In faith of confessors,
In innocence of holy virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.

Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness,
Of the Creator of Creation.

Amazing Grace
(Click)

By John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, .
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

DEAR LORD, who suffered torment, agony, and death upon the Cross to free our souls from the chains of iniquity, protect and defend our troops. Guide them in the performance of their duties. Strengthen them to endure hardship, danger and deprivation in Your service. Let their efforts free the people of Iraq and Afghanistan from the chains of terror and slavery, foster a lasting peace in the region, and bring all to a greater share in Your Mercy.

Amen.

And she watches with glee as i do them dutifully.

I had never heard the special verse for the Marines.

(Of course, when the Lyin' King sings that verse, the last two lines don't RHYME.)
